uhhmmmm, not sure where you got 20k, but i\'ve never seen a number anywhere near that low. 65k is about as low as i\'ve seen/heard it to be.

I stand corrected. I got my count from this link -
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/It_(Phish_festival)#Coventry. It said:
110,000 people were expected to attend. It was simulcast to thousands more in movie theaters across America. The event was also simulcast on XM Satellite Radio. Unfortunately, a week of rain had flooded the concert field to the point where people were turned away, causing gridlock on the highway and roads leading to the site. Rumors circulated that the stage was sinking. The band had made use of a local radio station turning it into "The Bunny" radio with live reports. The soothing DJ voices insisted that the fans would all get into the venue and to be patient and all would work out. The DJ\'s calming tones led fans to keep from breaking traffic rules, however when Phish Bassist Mike Gordon came on the radio, he announced that the field and venue were in a state of disaster and that no more vehicles would be allowed into the venue. Rumor quickly spread up and down the traffic lines which had now been 48-72 hours long that there would be another concert and that Coventry would not be the end since the band could not end things this way. With less than 20,000 fans in the venue, this was not the farewell that the band nor fans had planned.

Based on this picture from woodstock, where there were aprox. 450-500K people, the above Coventry picture is probably indicative of about 70-90K.
ahh, gotcha. maybe less than 20k were in when that announcement was made, but the end number was much higher...
I don\'t take anything away from Phish. I\'ve seen them around 10 times. Paul and I drove up to Oswego to see them in \'99. But I wouldn\'t give my left nut to see them, but if they were playing in my area and the price was right, I\'d try and get tickets. The point that I was trying to make is that you can\'t say that no other band could draw 100K or more when (U2 - 150,000 on 9/20/97).
well, he said no other band could draw 100,000 to limestone, maine, which is a much different proposition. could bruce get his fanbase to go to the middle of nowhere and camp for a weekend? no.
of course, at that point it becomes apples and oranges.

You right, but one last comment and I\'ll step off my soap box. If Phish wasn\'t based out of that region, do you think that they\'d still drag their fans to the middle of nowhere for a weekend of music?
I can\'t count Cypress or Coventry because one was before an announced hiatus and the second was for supposedly the last show ever...

Back in the day I always wanted them to go to a different place each year.
I still do.
not that i particularly wanna get involved in this one, but
I can\'t count Cypress or Coventry because one was before an announced hiatus and the second was for supposedly the last show ever...
what does this even mean?

Cypress was basically set up to say come and see us now because you don\'t know when we\'re going to get back together and play again.
And Coventry was set up as saying come and see us now because this is the last show we\'re ever going to play.
I give them credit for putting on the festivals and they are fun, but let\'s not make it out to be that they\'re the biggest band in the world or that this is the Superbowl of concerts because they\'re getting back together again. How long is it going to be before they say this is the last concert ever...again.
phish\'s hiatus was announced long after big cypress.

I stand corrected again...
