Phish to Swim from Wantagh to Hempstead?

Talks are in the works between town board directors and local authorities in Nassau County regarding a change of venue for the upcoming Long Island reunion of Vermont rock-band, Phish. Officials related to the situation tell Newsday that the scheduled concerts slated for June 4th and 5th at the Nikon Jones Beach Theatre are a "concern" for resident officials and feel by moving the concerts across counties to the nearby Nassau Coliseum would be a precautionary act.

Phish reunited this past weekend in Hampton Roads, VA, which drew roughly 75,000 loyal fans to the town\'s 13,000 seat arena. Known for their improv-rock and long four hour concerts, Phish fans usually reflect a party-type atmosphere. Reports from Hampton Roads indicate while the incident list from inside the actual arena was almost at zero, the outside perimeters were met with drug dealings, illegal vending, destroyed hotel properties and ticketless fans.

Officials worry that with the "open-air" setup at Jones Beach, many fans will show up to the show without a ticket in hand, knowing the music can be heard well and loud from the surrounding beach and parking lot areas. It is not unusual at a Phish concert to find many fans choosing to dance in the concourse of a venue rather than in view of the stage itself. Jones Beach also allows boats to "pull-up" to a perimeter marked in the water which leads to the venue, where the on-board may park and listen to the show from there. Many expect these issues could be a concern should the two sold-out shows draw more than capacity and force people to consider other options to hear the band kick-off there first Summer Tour since 2004.

Should agreements be met, band management tells Newsday that all current ticket holders will be able to use their current tickets for the re-located shows and that an additional 5,000 tickets per night will be sold at the venue box office on a first come, first serve basis due to the increased venue size. The concert would be a General Admission event. Phish has not played at the Jones Beach Theatre since July of 1995 when they were later considered to have outgrown the venue\'s small capacity size. Phish has played at the Nassau Coliseum six times since April of 1998.

i am in full support of this.

Really?  I consider Jones Beach a way better venue.

Small outdoor beach venue vs. Arena

I guess the extra 5,000 is good if you\'re shut out, but it\'s really a drop in the bucket.

if i had tix to jones beach, i might be singing a different tune.

the kicker for me was making the venue GA. that\'s a wonderful thing that wouldn\'t be happening if it weren\'t for this venue change.

traffic will be hell either way.

Summer is meant for outside concerts. I agree with you on this but Phish should have known this would be an issue at some point.

Save indoors for the fall.

on a different note...

anyone notice trey making strange scooping sounds during his solo\'s? it\'s definitely not a bend on the strings, it sounds like he\'s using his whammy pedal, but it\'s only set to go up one whole note as opposed to the full octave when he did his "siren" loop. he does it quite a bit throughout the show (i\'ve only listened to the first night) but just wondered what other people thought. whammy? it definitely seems to be his new trick.

and i\'m not going to jones beach but it def should be outside... looks like a sick venue

Digitech Whammy set to the 1st LED on the left side... I believe it\'s a full octave overtone. But you of course don\'t have to scoop the full octave just a little modulation of the pedal will give you the "scoop". Like if you hit a note with the pedal rocked down and then slowly rock it up you\'ll get that sound. Pretty trippy **** and one of my favorite tricks to bust out on occasion as well. Rocked all the way up the pedal gives that space-funk sound with a lot of treble. Scoop it down quick and rock back up slowly and that\'s the "scoop" ;)

I\'m not sure it\'s really a new trick but I could tell Trey was having a little fun with it.

yeah, i definitely noticed the \'swooping\'.... here\'s the thing though - he almost always is swooping down. its like he was intentionally trying to rein in the jams by always having descending lines, as opposed to the scale climbing peaks we\'re used to. as in, they were very intentionally trying to keep explosive jams to a minimum while they focused on the songs themselves. which, for this run, seems like a great idea, to me.

makes sense. Nothing really got out of their grasp.

I enjoyed the focus on the songs. Brought me back to the days of a more structured Phish show.
