2012 is simply the beginning of the 14th cycle of 394 years, or baktun. Tha date is written left to right baktun.katun.tun.uinal.katun (an example date is 14.8.16.3.12). Since baktuns are the top cycle and end at 13 (13.0.0.0.0), the roll over to 14 is the equivalent of 0 (0.0.0.0.0.0), which was the date they started with, supposedly either the day they started making the calendar, or the dawn of creation. The argued days for this event are:
13.0.0.0.0 = 8 Sep 3114 BC (Julian) = 13 Aug 3114 BC (Gregorian)
13.0.0.0.0 = 6 Sep 3114 BC (Julian) = 11 Aug 3114 BC (Gregorian)
13.0.0.0.0 = 11 Nov 3374 BC (Julian) = 15 Oct 3374 BC (Gregorian)

What do you mean by the galactic underworld? If the mayan calendar is the end of the world, then how can it also be a midpoint? AND, if it is an midpoint, what happens at the endpoint?

the long count is only one of 9 underworlds that are laid on top of each other exponentially all ending on october 28th, 2011 (the 2012 date has been recently found to be inaccurate).  each of these underworlds are projections of the tzolkin count (13x20) that all stem from the endpoint, which according to the mayan calendar will be the end of the process of devine creation.  The different underworlds are as follows:

Universal - 13x20 kins (260 days duration) [?]
Galactic - 13x20(to the 0 power) tuns (12.8 years duration) [information technology]
Planetary - 13x20(to the 1 power) tuns (256 years) [industrialism]
National (Long Count) - 13x20(to the 2 power) tuns (5,125 years) [written language]
Regional - 13x20(to the 3 power) tuns (102,000 years) [spoken language]
Tribal - 13x20(to the 4 power) tuns (2 million years) [first humans]

the end of the world is not what is prophesized.  it\'s the end of the world AS WE KNOW IT.  the universal underworld leading up to the end date of all the underworlds (oct 28th 2011) will bring about the unity to the duality of man which dominated the national underworld, favoring western (left-brain) thought,  followed by a universal spiritual blindfold in the planetary underworld, and now, currently a dualist galactic underworld favoring easter (rightbrain) thought, followed by a balance in the universal underworld.  ok enough of this for now...

understanding how the mayan calendar can be used prophetically (is that a word?) requires a fairly indepth knowledge of all the cycles of the calendar and how it applies to human history.
