So I recently found out I will be inheriting some money, and I plan on donating (yea, I\'ll get you to peck, calm down) some of it once I figure out what\'s what after taxes. I\'m wondering what charities people like around here. Obviously I\'m looking for larger properly run organizations with tax ids and a breakdown of how moneys will be distributed, web links ideally so I can research as well. I\'ll be giving some to the Meriden pet shelter that Cori was talking about recently, but I\'d like to spread it among a few organizations.

So who likes what, and no personal groveling. I will not be donating to the human fund.

Additionally, I suggest all of you donate what you can out of your tax returns if possible. It\'s always best to give whenever you can, you never know when you will be on the other side.

Two of my personal favorites are:
1)Saint Jude Children\'s Hospital... no child there is turned away because of a parent\'s inability to pay for services
2)& also American Diabetes Association, for obvious reasons!

Good luck choosing a charity - all would benefit from a donation!

The Red Cross

St Jude\'s is a good one... I have done stuff for them in the past (horse-related money raising)

I have the National Multiple Slcerosis walk coming up in April if you want to sponsor me.

Cheshire Relay for Life/American Cancer Society in June.

The Foundation for a Cure for Mitochondrial Disease is also a good one. This foundation was started by a Cheshire family who lost their 13 year old daughter to this rare disease. I strongly support this one, because based on recent reports, they are really making progress.

But in all seriousness. If you are getting extra money I would highly suggest investing in your future. I am not really sure how old you are etc but having a safety net regardless of size is always a great idea. Giving to charity is always a nice idea and I am not trying to take away from that.

You could easily place the $ in a CD and earn some money off of it especially if you don\'t need it right now. Just roll it over each time it comes up. You will have to pay a small amount of capitol gains tax but it would be worth it to have it for a rainy day so to speak

I work at the United Way of Greater New Haven and we are always looking for donations. Money given to the United Way helps better the community and people in Greater New Haven. I think this would be a good place to donate seeing as though so many of us are from this area, and the money would go directly to helping people from New Haven and surrounding towns. If I were to ever come into money, the charities I would donate to would include:

Any charity for Lupus research
St Jude\'s Children\'s Fund
Planned Parenthood

and of course,

Space City Affair, LLC d/b/a The Breakfast (probably the charity with the MOST DIRE NEED for some funds)

Sierra Club and Environmental Defense both spend a huge amount of your money on political lobbyists. This is not what they tell you when they come asking for your money however. And I just cannot deal with the idea of giving any lobbyist my money without approving them and their agenda first.

As far as the Red Cross goes... well, that\'s just a personal thing. After Hurricane Katrina, my family decided to give all of the money that we would normally spend on Christmas gifts to The Red Cross\' Hurricane Relief Fund. I gave several hundred dollars. More than I usually spend at Christmas. My parents gave quite a bit more than that. And you would think that that money would be seriously needed, and put to good use quickly. Nope. It was almost a YEAR before the checks were cashed. However, they did send me a "thanks for your donation" letter in the mail almost immediately, complete with an envelope and a request for another donation. :rolleyes:
