Blind Melon to reform with new singer
« on: November 05, 2006, 08:51:25 pm »
It\'s a couple weeks old, but I figured I\'d post this for those, like myself, that missed it. Totally forgot the date of Shannon\'s death until I read this. Same day as Robyn\'s birthday. Eeks!!
It\'ll be interesting to hear what they come up with, but I\'m not holding my breath. In my ears, Shanon is pretty much irreplaceable!! SO glad I was fortunate enough to see him at Toad\'s shortly before his death. I\'ll def. give the new singer an honorable listen, but It\'ll never be the same!!

Saturday will mark the 11th anniversary of Shannon Hoon\'s drug overdose death, but Blind Melon have experienced a rebirth in interest over the past year and recently reformed with a new singer.

Glen Graham (drums), Christopher Thorn (guitar), Brad Smith (bass) and Rogers Stevens (guitar) have added former Rain Fur Rent frontman Travis Warren (more info on Warren here) as their new vocalist and started writing new songs. The band members originally looked for a replacement for Hoon a decade ago, but decided to go their separate ways instead of carrying on with the grunge-meets-classic rock group.

Blind Melon have somehow kept a loyal fanbase over the years, and a two-day vigil was even held at Hoon\'s grave in Dayton, Indiana last month. The event was carried over the internet for Melonheads who couldn\'t attend in person, and it concluded with the eight-band Vigilstock concert in his nearby hometown of Lafayette. The vigil is apparently an annual event, so check out the band\'s fan site for updates around the time of Hoon\'s September 26 birthday if you desperately yearn to attend next year.

Interest from less avid fans of the band was spurred by last year\'s Best Of Blind Melon CD/DVD, which featured previously unreleased live material, soundtrack contributions and music videos.

Capitol Records released Blind Melon Live At The Palace, an October 11, 1995 concert recording from the Palace Theater in Hollywood, California, this week. A tribute album titled Twenty Stories Below is scheduled to come out on December 15 through New Zealand\'s YakMusic label.

Blind Melon formed in Los Angeles in 1989 and signed to Capitol two years later. Hoon was friends with Guns N\' Roses\' frontman Axl Rose and sang back-up on several songs on Use Your Illusion, which created a buzz in advance of the release of Blind Melon\'s self-titled debut in the fall of \'92. The album spawned the hit single/video "No Rain" (featuring the infamous bee girl), and the band toured extensively in support of the disc before starting to record the follow-up (Soup) with Nirvana producer Andy Wallace in the fall of \'94.

Hoon was in and out of rehabilitation facilities for his drug problems during this time, but went out on the road against a counsellor\'s wishes. He was found dead, at the age of 28, on the band\'s tour bus on October 21, 1995.

Am I the only one that didn\'t like Blind Melon - even with the original line up?  If so, you can blame this guy Rick from Southern that always played them 24 hours a day.  Sorry, but I can only take that guy\'s voice in small doses, much like Robert Plant, Steven Tyler and Mick Jagger.

the only time i ever saw shannon hoon was when he was a back up singer for guns n roses!

i\'ve got a couple bm shows and they\'re alright, but never made me want to drop everything and go catch a show or anything. so no, yoda, you\'re not entirely alone. sometimes i\'ll throw on one of their shows for something a little different, but i never seem to make it all the way through.

I think blind melon is a great band to play in the summertime.  I toss in a disc when driving to the cape for alot of weekends, seems to put me in a pretty good mood.  (wow, that kinda sounds pretty lame reading it back to myself)

Always liked them from the first time I heard \'Tones of Home\', which I bought on the off chance from a bargain bin for, on today\'s exchange rates, 25 cents. \'No Rain\', is definitely a classic, which still blows away most of the stuff from the US being lauded by our music press at the time, and would always make any "best of the 90s" CD I ever decided to make.

OK, so the singer\'s changed, but the guitar sound was really good. How the hell can people not want to check them out for $12?

I just listened to 15 seconds of one of their new songs. Why the fuck did they try and find a singer with a similar voice to Shannon\'s? It was just horrible and I couldn\'t listen to any more of it.
