Wolfman Breakfast Statistician installs Buquebus as a 23 vote favorite in the final. Place your bets.
That being said, allow me to make the case for Sundance. (Somebody\'s gotta do it. Saddam gets a lawyer...Ross Perot had a campaign manager...in this great country, you still deserve representation even if you\'re obviously f-ed from the get-go. It\'s the American way people! :flag:)
Sundance is the thinking person\'s choice for champion. Let\'s start off with jamability. Sundance is right there with Attraction to Shade Ditty and Wake Up In A Coma for best Breakfast intro jam. Sundance is often colossal before it even begins. (Radio Joe 5/5/01 for a great set-opening Sundance intro jam.) Can\'t say that about Buquebus. Queeb you have to wait for them to get the first verses and chorus out of the way before the tune picks up. Sundance then has a second jam right after the first set of vocals that has unlimited potential and is often the best jam of a set. The same can certainly be said for the second Buquebus jam, so second jam is a wash. Overall jamming edge I can give to Buquebus because Buquebus jams are bigger on average, but I have seen both songs taken to the same height on their best night. Compositionally it\'s not even close. Sundance has incredible chord structure, Zappa-esqe jazz figures, crazy time signatures, the works. Highly effective, engaging, and challenging. Buquebus composition is clearly written at a lesser level. The simplicity is effective but not noteworthy. It\'s the same 4-bar phrases repeated over and over, right from the first notes of the song. Vocally again Sundance takes the edge. Somebody find me melodies and harmonies in Buquebus as well done as the "hop and a skip starting on your good side" (etc.) lines and the entire "let\'s see your face in the sky" section. Can\'t do it. Sundance actually uses 5 distinct vocal melodies to Buquebus\' 2. Finally, there\'s the frequency corollary. Buquebus is probably the band\'s most popular song and gets plenty of play. Sundance is definitely the most underrated song and hearing it is a treat and adds an element of specialness to a show. It takes a true serhead to vote for Sundance. Nothing wrong with a vote for Buquebus, it\'s a great song, but a vote for Sundance shows a deep level of Breakfast understanding.
There, I made the case. Someone had to take the challenge. I have never voted against Buquebus. I have proclaimed it as my favorite Breakfast song since day one. But I\'ve always been a huge Sundance backer as well. And for today I am proud to take Sundance over the monster of Buquebus. It\'s much like the NCAA basketball tournament where you just have to love the underdog going up against the goliath. There\'s something undeniably endearing about it.
