The Funk Box....
« on: May 10, 2006, 02:06:45 am »
is my new radio program debuting wednesday night/thursday morning from 3:30 - 6:00 am on the Umass radio station, 91.1 WMUA, Amherst.

I would be more than honored if anyone from this board will give it a listen, either on the radio if you\'re in the area (pioneer valley, western/central MA, and maybe some parts of northern CT) or stream on the web at http://wmua.org/index.php.   I will also be recording the program straight from the board to CD, so if anyone has any interest in a copy you can post in this thread or send me a PM.

But just to sell the show to you guys a little, i\'ll be playing the likes of these artist included but not limited to by any means:

Frank Zappa, Miles Davis, The JB\'s, David Axelrod, Roy Ayers, Jimmy Smith, Weather Report, Mahavishnu Orchestra, Herbie Hancock, George Duke, Billy Cobham, Phish, Grateful Dead, Sublime, RHCP, Pink Floyd, Jimi Hendrix, Nektar, Greyboy Allstars, Vida Blue, TAB, IF, Caravan, Soft Machine, Gong, Garcia/Wales, A Tribe Called Quest, Outkast, J5, Beastie Boys,

and of course.....

Have a blast dude! Best part of having your own radio show is your friends can come on and you can say they are a celebrity, and nobody knows the difference, \'cept maybe your station manager.
One of the incidents cited when I got kicked off my show back in \'98 was my friend,  claiming to be Scot Weiland, pleading for someone to bring a bag of heroin to the studio STAT.
A man who has seen the things I have seen,
experienced the loss and pain I have experienced,
I transcend race, hombre.

heheh same here...got excited for a sec..

either way, congrats on the show..definitely good exposure. i don\'t know if there is any talking other than the music on the funk box show, but maybe you could get someone from the band to call in/interview about upcoming shows or something.

Looks like a sick show funk-mang... unfortunately I can\'t really be awake during those hours anymore (jobs really cramp my style).

Well, good luck with that nonetheless!

First of all, that was an intentional marketing ploy, and i have to apologize...i just wanted people to read my thread....plus i\'m extremely uncreative when it comes to giving things titles, so i totally ripped off the venue.

haha...its not all necesarily "funk" but i will be playing the funkier tunes that mahavishnu play. i.e. "can\'t stand your funk" or "cosmic strut" off of visions of the emerald beyond.

hahahahaha.....no doubt.  i\'ve recently expanded my taste and have tried to really get some stuff that is pretty obscure.  Always down for more.  And to answer your question, i have this amazing record store in Amherst with sucha great variety and a listening station, so i basically spent most of my afternoons just trying out new shit, and one day come upon "down to earth" which has since become prob my fav record, or at least one of them.

thanks dude, but first i gotta actually preform. i\'m extremely nervous and as some of you guys might know, i\'m not exactly the most outspoken person in the world.....but ya the shows are really inconsistent because the "station philosophy" is to play diverse music that you won\'t find on other stations.  Good idea in theory i guess, but it comes out sounding like shit, and nobody on campus really ever listens.

good to hear Gabe...if you want to call in the number is

oh and btw.....i will be going under the psuedynem (sp?) "MikeyWhathefunk" or DJ WTFunk, for lack of a better name (once again the uncreativity sets in) so there will be a real .info essence to my show!!! and remember i\'ll be recording and more than happy to snail mail/bnp/bring to shows, a copy for any one with the slightest interest!

Yeah I was nervous at first with my show. The best thing to do is realize that 2 or 3 people are actually listening to your show. Once that sinks in you\'ll be golden. IF you ever need any more Soft Machine, Nektar, Gong and Caravan just holler and I\'ll hook you up because that is beyond impressive man. Seriously!

well, my show was madd fun, and it ended up being about 3 hours instead of 2 1/2 b/c the DJ that was on before me left early.  But it turned out to be 3 cd\'s  worth of material with the first disc clocking in at 40mins, the second (which is the bulk of the show) is 80mins, and the third disc is the remainder of about another 40 mins.  I feel like i brought sooo much music and only got to play a small amount of it, so it was a little unsatisfying, but will just give me more motivation for next time.

After listening to all the three discs, the only one i feel content with is the second disc (80 mins of nice segways of jazzy funk and funky jazz)  and will be pleased to distribute it at no charge or hassle to anyone with any interest.  I don\'t really want to give a track list at this point (leave a lil element of suprise....it is radio afterall) but just to sell it once again, it includes artists such as, oliver nelson, the JB\'s, the meters, jimmy smith, mahavishnu, beastie boys instrumentals, isaac hayes, and much more.

if you have any interest at all, i\'ll do all the work, just post something in this thread, or PM me your address and you will recieve a PM to confirm shortly after.  I can either snail mail copies, or bring to upcoming shows, but not sure which ones i\'ll be making it to quite yet.  But ya, Thanks for all the support guys....
