I got engaged
« on: March 29, 2006, 02:53:58 am »
I am very happy and excited.  Yet, I am a little overwhelmed.  I was wondering if anyone else has had a nervous feeling...or anxiety about getting married.  Unfortunately, my mother is making it worse by single-handedly taking over the whole event planning.  I feel like I am losing a grip already on whats going on...and its only been a few weeks.

Congratulations! Let your mom do the hard work and just make sure what YOU want she gets.

congratulations!!

The biggest 3 peices of advice I can give:
1. go here and sign up: http://www.theknot.com/ It\'s free, keeps a calendar for you and is a life saver.
2. No matter how much your parents are doing, remeber that it is your wedding day, not theirs!! They are not the ones getting married. If you are dead set against something, take a stand. You may have to pick your battles, but make a point of this in conversation now before someone takes over and you loose control.
3. Christine found that the bride magazines in the store are like 9$ each, but to sign up for a years subscription is only like $15. If your wedding is more than a month away, it\'s cheaper to subscribe.

I have always wanted to do that (preside over a wedding)

Congrats on your engagement.

If you need a band my GF (bigmamablueberry) works for an extremely talented band leader. He used to play with Ray Charles etc. Very classy and they can play anything. (funk, jazz, standards you name it. They tailor the band to what you want etc)

Put your foot down on the guest list!  Despite my protests my mom bullied my good hearted wife who was afraid of getting on her bad side.  Mom contributed very little financially, yet ran up my bill with long lost relatives, some of whom I\'d never seen before or since (no exaggeration).  They ate well, soaked up my open bar and often stiffed us on the gifts (yeah I know it\'s shallow, but I went into debt for that wedding!) while some of my friends got cut from the invites b/c we were already so far over budget.  To top it all off, some old lady (my great aunt? ) I don\'t know is in alot of the pictures b/c the photographer assumed she was my grandmother.  Both my grandmothers are dead, and photos of this old bat mean nothing to me.
We still had a great time, but @ $100 or so per plate, make everyone count!

I might take you up on this.  I really really don\'t want a DJ.  (because knowing my wacky family, they will spend the whole night requesting the chicken dance, the macarena, and the electric slide)   We were thinking of going with a band.

Thank you everyone for your advice!  Next weekend we are going to start browsing around and looking at reception places.  I really want to stay away from Staven traditions like Anthony\'s and Amarantes.  We are thinking about Saint Clement\'s Castle in Portland...its far away....but if the pictures prove to be what it is, its totally unique and gorgeous.  The only problem I have with that is...do you really make everyone drive from a church in new haven....all the way to Portland for a reception? Is that cruel?
