Any one remember Journeyman. The Pop album Clapton made in \'89? Yeah I know some are gonna say "That\'s not a Pop album."
 It is though. Compared to his previous work it is as Poppy as the flower. Take a look @ the tracklisting. How many of those songs are Clapton staples now? Pop music can be made by shredding axemen for sure.

Yeah but that Angel was actually The Fallen Angel in disguise. It took his creativity in playing in exchange for ONE REALLY KILLER SOLO and renewed popularity.

clapton started making pop albums in the 70\'s.  Backless, is an incredible example

Only problem was that most of said artists were crap!! :)

True it got him more record sales, but give me his 70s output anytime.

I cannot stand the Santana/Rob Thomas song "Smooth".  That crap has been annoying me consistently for years now.

I actually listened to that album recently - well tried to. Only made about half of the album as I kept skipping to the instrumental tracks. When I got home, I then dug out Dance of the Rainbow Servant, which amongst other things, contains some excellent collaborations with musicians worthy of playing with Santana.

santana is a genious. I\'ll use my talent that is respected by other musicians and allow them to sit in on a song from my new album. Then their fans, which probably have heard my name, but would never buy my albums, will go buy it because of the sit in musicians. Same thing rap artists have done for years, but Santana is so well founded that he gets to pick the best of the best of the most popular and have 10 or 20 musicians of that caliber sit in on every album. Absolutely Brilliant.

Plus, he says that he got the idea from an angel who came to him in a vision. How santana is that?!

Also, Jimi Hendrix. Some of his songs were def pop, and you don\'t get much more talented than that. Also Van Hallen.
