Thread: "Confirmed!"
« on: September 13, 2005, 12:34:49 pm »
While assuming the position of "The Thinker", as I do every day for 46.25 minutes, I recently pondered how anyone can confirm their own statement.  I have good news and bad news for all of you who are fans of the confirmation.

The bad news is that you are all misusing the concept horribly.  You cannot simply utter a sentence and then say "confirmed".  This confirms nothing except your own confusion with the concept of confirmation.  Someone else must confirm for you.  If you agree with someone else\'s thought and are feeling quite lazy, you can just quote them and write "confirmed".  (Although this will come across as an inability on the part of the confirmer to put any new thoughts into the world.)  The next time you are talking to someone for real, confirm yourself a few times and check out the looks it gets you.

The good news is, I believe it is possible to confirm yourself if your original theory is of an objective nature.  For example, if you were to say, "I think The Breakfast has played Porter\'s more than 10 times," and then you went back and researched it and found out that your original theory was correct, then you could come back and say "confirmed."  Confirming yourself with a subjective statement is virtually impossible.  For example, if you say "The 7th Fonghoulish Freakout will be the best one yet" or "moe.down was the best time of my life," you cannot confirm that.  You do not need to confirm your own opinion, as it is already self-evident that that is what you think.  Confirming your own opinion only shows a lack of self-confidence.  Someone else could come along and give your opinion the old "confirmed," but really it would be more appropriate to say, "I vehemently agree!"

Bottom line, here are the rules for saying "confirmed."

1.  The idea being confirmed must be objective.
2.  You may only confirm yourself if you go back and research your idea and can prove it to be true.
3.  You may only confirm someone else if you know what they said is true.
4.  When confirming someone else, you must also add your own thoughts or at least offer the facts that prove your confirmation.  Posts that consist only of a quote and a "confirmed" will result in a 10-minute penalty for the poster.  That means 10 minutes of no .info!  (Say, that gives me another great idea...the .info penalty box!)

I would like to take this time to point out that I vehemently agree with myself on everything I just said.

I believe Seth is right, 100%.

I thoroughly agree with all he has said. However, I cannot confirm his opinion, it being an opinion and all...

all this coming from the kid that used the phrase "SER face plantage" to describe the fall that girl took at the porter\'s show.  What does the dictionary have to say about that phrase???

that was awesome!

while i would certainly have never said anything aloud, i\'ve definitely pondered the malapropian nature of this board a time or two! when i first started lurking around here, i thought for sure you guys were using some bizarre code language!!! luckily i\'ve figured it out. with a little help and some studying, i actually found myself confirming someone while camping last weekend.

while I can\'t confirm Jocelyn any more than she can confirm wolf, I will back her 100% with a hearty "second"
