Has anyone else been following the news about Hurricane Katrina and her most destructive, powerful and unforgivable winds?

This may be the most destructive hurricane to touch land in U.S. history. The Mayor of New Orleans, was quoted as saying, "he has come to that fact the New Orleans will be completely destroyed." I read an article that online that said, if New Orleans gets the brunt of it, there will be corpses in the street, all of the cemetaries are below sea level.

A hurricane in 1722 almost wiped out the city completely, forcing the city to rebuild. New Orleans in 1788 was almost lost again, with the historic event, the Great Fire on Good Friday, March 21. Another fire burnt the city in 1794.

Storm is projected to hit land late tonight/early morning.

Winds are some powerful that everything will be completely destroyed. This is a tragic historical event occuring. Literally, life for so many in Louisiana is about to change forever. For a city that is no stranger to being out of control, with such a unique and rich history, this will be amazing to see what occurs. My thoughts go out to all those down there.. "Tropical Depression 13" is closely behind Katrina. Could make for a 1-2 punch KO.

I am glad I got to visit Noleans back in October 2002 because there is a good chance that this poor poor city will not exist come tomorrow......

I\'m interested in seeing what comes of this. If Katrina hits hard first and the storm following hits moderate, they will be completely devasted. If you think of how old the city is, the construction and dates of those buildings, the Voodoo religion and the Creole culture,  some scary shit is going through all of those peoples minds. Some of those houses have been in families for 5 generations, since the city was first developed. It really will be tragic if the city is completely destroyed.

I have heard something like 30ft storm surges......

I can see no\'leans easily being sucked into the gulf of mexico the same way a heady mind-eraser is sucked into my skull at Richters on wednesday nights...

The news last night said the surge may be just as bad, if not worse, than the tidle wave tsunami thingamajig. And seeing as though New orleans is 70% under sea level they were saying the city would be flooded under 20+ feet of water.

Not sure how much of this Marcial is gonna get of this, seeing as I don\'t know what part of \'Bama he is in, but the projected path is soaring through half of the state tomorrow morning. That said, Marcial, if you\'re in its path I hope all is safe and sound for you and your family during its passing. We\'ll all be praying for ya. And if its not in your neck of the woods, well, watch out for those tornados stemming off the outskirts anyway.

it appears that new orleans has dodged a bullet though....  the worst part of the storm is the northeast quadrant which is reigning terror west of no\'leans in mississippi......

either way, i am sure the whole gulf coast is pretty much fucked by the time its all said and done

Not as bad as I thought they would get it. It still is pretty destructive. I would wait till the end of the week to really assess any damge in New Orleans. More rain would be catastrophic. I guess a levee has broke and water in some spots are as high as 12 feet.

Still more to come throughout the day. But this storm is hitting parts of the south much harder.

It\'s possible.

I read a year ago how the weather channel has updated all the music on the channel. They wanted to play more contempory music, hence the multiple Phish tunes in elavator music sound. There was a quote from an elderly women on 65-70 years old, who called up the station to tell them how pleased she was to hear Phish\'s YEM being played, she had no idea what YEM, Phish was.

So anything is possible.

I\'m in Birmingham (North Central AL), basically on the far east side of the storm\'s current projected path.  We have been hit by Ivan in 2004 and Dennis this past June... we lost power for several days with both of these storms (luckily we have a generator) and my next door neighbor had a huge tree (24\'\' diameter trunk) fall on his house during Dennis.  Things are still relatively calm at the moment, but the shit is supposed to hit the fan around 4 or 5 pm.  Even though New Orleans didn\'t get a direct hit, there will still be major damage... from what I\'ve heard around here, there have been many buildings knocked down already.
