Do any of you frequent the Craigslist serving your local city?
I have discovered that this is one of the best websites around for a number of purposes, though the website originally came online to serve the Bay Area and as a result, the S.F. edition probably has more depth than other cities that were later added.
Most of the best jobs in an assortment of fields are posted and people actually respond to resume submissions (unlike most resume postings to an employer\'s corporate website). There are also miscellaneous projects and paid studies that compensate well for an hour or two of one\'s time that are posted. I am planning on a taking a beer drinking study next week where I get paid $100 to sample and discuss beers for 1.5 hours.
There are tons of free stuff to be had. I just moved to a new apartment and am discovering that all the furnishings on my list are available for free. You name it and you will probably find it. I have found a brand new microwave, a bed that was only used for a month, a PC wireless adaption card, a Foreman Grill, a glass coffee table, and any thing else I could think of. Since I miss the old hot tub that was in the backyard of the old house I just moved from, I went on Craigslist to see if there were freebies available. It turns out that there are plenty of hot tubs for free. Most were junky or needed repairs, though I actually found a 1-year old tub that was in perfect condition and was just purchased for $6000. It turns out that the wealthy couple was so determined to get rid of it that they even offered to deliver it to the interested person(s). From what I\'ve noticed, so many people are coming and going to/from the Bay Area that there is so much stuff that people can\'t bring with them on their move - much of which ends up on Craigslist. If you had a garage for storage, you could probably make a living by taking free stuff and re-selling it, especially since there are so many valuable items (ex-leather couches) available all the time.
You can also meet people on Craigslist for purposes of kinky fetishes, dates, or simply to make friends with people that have common interests in your area. My old roomate has made lots of good friends through the website by finding people that want to spin west coast house music with him.
You can also get a good sense of a city you have never been to by viewing apt. prices and other information.
Craigslist is such a vital connection to the lives of many Bay Area residents that a movie was recently made titled "48 Hours on Craigslist". From what I remember, it was about a span of time that revolved around people and activities found on the website.
