Breakfast Merch (Or Lack Thereof)
« on: May 13, 2005, 03:18:11 pm »
It dawned on me last night while at Donna The Buffalo at Toads; why can\'t the Breakfast have a decent merch table with a wide variety of items?  While I had no particular desire to purchase a t-shirt, I almost would have just because some of the shirts looked really nice. They had a wide variety of shirts, hats, and other items and people were lined up at the end of the show to buy stuff.

With no disrespect for Chris on this one, why not have hats, key chains, lighters, etc?  I am sure it would help pay for some of the expenses for the band while on the road.  People are jonesing for copies of the first CD, why not reprint it and sell it (unless there is some licensing/contract issue).  I have an Umphrey\'s key chain/opener that I\'d be happy to replace with the Breakfast, if it was available.

Anyway just my thoughts; discuss, rant, etc......
"Anyone who knows a god damn thing about this band and has been there as long as some of us have, know god damn well that this show was something special." Ren re: Toads 8/23/07

merch is such a catch twenty-two. it costs a bundle to get made up, its cumbersome and takes up space in the van, and you always have to worry about someone swiping stuff (i knew a band from nc who had their whole merch stash stolen). however, since the prices to mass produce are lower than the prices we\'d pay for single items, and since it\'d be already paid for any money made is immediate gas/food money, and of course all the free advertising is invaluable so of course its a good idea. its just that the cash is required upfront and most bands at their stage probably don\'t have much of a war chest set up for those type of expenses.

so why not start off with selling live shows/dvds? burn the discs, have a labeling party (10 people can get 200 done in no time) and then sell them for 10 or 15 bucks at shows. maybe the band can pick some of their favorite versions of tunes, maybe pick the cream of the crop from the RR tour (because 05 is simply badassery all the way around) or some maybe just pick some great classic shows. then, take the proceeds from that to start a kitty for tshirts, stickers (which are a neccessity in the merch world) and the like?

the obvious problem is that folks can just go download most shows (which is a good thing), but not everyone can, and lots of folks are very immediate impulse buyers and won\'t want to wait after having been blown away. are there any more shows/dvds like the cafe9 that aren\'t widely available yet? cause i\'d probably start there, along with uac, toads, and maybe one or two others from this year.

Don\'t you guys get it?  This band isn\'t interested in making money (at least they don\'t show it).  They\'re musicians that like to play in front of big crowds and if they make a little money to get them to the next gig, that\'s nice.   The concept of "it takes money to make money" appears to elude them.  Even if you give them the "money" (in the form of products/services) they fail to appreciate or take advantage of it.

Here\'s an idea: I bet a nice live DVD would sell great on the merch table!  i even know some people that could probably get it done.

#1.merch is sorta like good advertisement.without them advertising, how would anyone know about them?
#2.selling live shows would only hurt the sales of real radio, and the others..
#3.if these guys wanna be around in another 5 years, they need to start steppin it up big time.

Light travels faster than sound. That is why some people appear bright...until you hear them speak.
