Suprnova.org has closed down its BitTorrent service for good

Just several days ago, the US film industry announced that it is preparing to sue the operators of file sharing servers that assist with or offer unauthorised movies across file sharing networks, primarily BitTorrent and eDonkey. Unlike Kazaa, Gnutella and simialar P2P networks, BitTorrent is run by centralised websites that assist with searches and tracking files (or seeds) on BitTorrent.
Unfortunately, SuprNova.org which operated as a very popular BitTorrent hub has decided to permanently shut down its service for good saying that they are certainly not going to host any more torrent links even if the site does manage to return. Going by the message they left on their home page, it is not clear if there were simply overwhelmed with legal threats or if the movie or music industry had actually filed a suit against them. For now they have decided to keep their IRC servers and discussion forums open. Fr4nz and big-byrd both used our news submit to let us know about the following news:
As posted on the SuprNova.org homepage:
Greetings everybody,
As you have probably noticed, we have often had downtimes. This was because it was so hard to keep this site up!
But now we are sorry to inform you all, that SuprNova is closing down for good in the way that we all know it.
We do not know if SuprNova is going to return, but it is certainly not going to be hosting any more torrent links.
We are very sorry for this, but there was no other way, we have tried everything.
Thank you all that helped us, by donating mirrors or something else, by uploading and seeding files, by helping people out on IRC and on forum, by spreading the word about SuprNova.org.
It is a sad day for all of us!
Please visit SuprNova.org every once in a while to get the latest news on what is happening and if there is anything new to report on.
As we wish to maintain the nice comunity that we created, we are keppig forums and irc servers open.
Thank you all and Goodbye!
sloncek & the rest of the SuprNova Team
This will be surely be a sad time for BitTorrent users, especially those who have used SuprNova.org as their prime site. However like the shutdown of Napster, this does not mean that the peers are going to suddenly give up sharing their content. For these it will mean a bit of time looking for the next best alternative, potentially boosting the amount of content on other file sharing networks.
