Word nigga.  Public Enemy rocks, especially "Fear of a Black Planet."  That album is dope.  And let us not forget the grand masters of hip-hop, GrandmasterFlash and the Furious 5 and the Sugar Hill Gang.  GMFATFF5 are so ill it\'s stoopid.  The Message still gives me goosebumps every time, I\'m not kidding.  That song completely transcended hip-hop.  Every other song they have is about partying and shit, they threw The Message on the end of an album  thinking nobody would like it...unbelievable.  The last verse, is one of the best ever.  Their other songs slam too, and they\'re all 8-10 minutes long!  And Grandmaster, I mean, the guy fuckin\' invented the entire concept of cutting 2 records together.  What a group.  As good as J5 is, they got every non-lyrical move they have from the Furious 5.  And where the *&^% is J5 anyways?  Where are the Total Devastation fans at?  (I know Freddie\'s down.)  Doug E Fresh is in the house.  And some of my other favorite old-school ill-matic joints:

Are any of you familiar with Ubiquity Records?  They are based in S.F. and put out some of the DJ Greyboy albums.  They have some great artists and compilations in their catalog of music.  
I bought some awesome funk/jazz/disco albums and compilations.

I have an offer for anyone who is interested in acquiring records in addition to tapes/cds.  I accidentally received a 2 record set from a recent music order I placed.  I plan on copying the records to tapes then giving it away to an interested party.  It\'s called No Categories and is put out by Ubiquity Records.  It\'s a DJ mix of funk/jazz and hiphop on all of the tracks.  I\'m sure someone on here likes that kind of stuff.  I\'ll pay the postage too.

If you want to sample the tracks, go to http://www.ubiquityrecords.com and look for the No Categories series.  There are several No Categories releases that are numbered 2-5.  This one doesn\'t have a number because it was the first compilation in the series.

Jamiroquai is a band that I have loved for a solid 8 years yet know very little about.  I am wondering if they tour or ever make it over to the U.S. as we never hear much about them.  I really think all of their albums are absolutely great.  

Does anyone have any comments to offer?  Maybe Andy (Boombox) because he has the U.K. inside track.

There must be someone on the forum with Jamiroquai insight.

huge jamiroquai fan here, though i don\'t really like the direction they took after \'travelling without moving\'.. their new stuff, while good, sorta moved away from the funk on the first 3 albums, and started going more \'dance\' music. it also didn\'t last long over here. travelling without moving gave them a good run with virtual insanity becoming popular, cosmic girl and alright also getting some play.. but after that, i think canned heat was the only thing i ever heard (getting play).

they pretty much packed it up and abandoned the US market after that. i believe they released a DVD in 2003 (not available over here, of course), and also had a brief tour in \'03. but they haven\'t released anything since \'a funk oddyssey\', so who knows.. kinda sucks, cause pre-1998, they really funked it up..

Have to agree with dave\'s take on them - first three albums are great, then.... Always wished I hadn\'t taped over a fantastic live set from WDR Rockpalast I had on video from the early days whehn the band were well up for it.

Don\'t do much over here now either - JK is more interested in driving his sports cars these days and hanging out at celeb bashes. I believe he lives somewhere in the states now.

I think they can pull together in the future and create another great album.  

I really like Funk Odyssey, but a more appropriate title would probably be Dance Odyssey.

I really like the Late Night Tales compilation put out with Jamiroquai\'s name on it.  Has some great funk/soul tracks from the 70\'s.

Boombox, have you heard of the James Taylor Quartet?  I think they are supposed to be a funky British band.

Leith, have you had any exposure to the West Coast acid jazz band Slide 5?  I am also wondering if they are still together and touring.

I\'m sure many of you on here are familiar with Greyboy.  I am wondering if anyone knows if \'Land of the Lost\', the follow up album to \'Freestylin\', is any good.  It had a good review on Amazon.com but is one of the few albums that doesn\'t have the tracks available for 1 minute listening samples.

JTQ are a good 60s style acid-jazz band led by James Taylor on organ. He was previously in a great mod-revival band in the mid-80s called Makin\' Time, who were fantastic the one time I saw them. A similar band, who I prefer, but more in the Jamiroquai vein with more vocals and guitar are Mother Earth, led by Matt Deighton. I can ask my brother-in-law who\'s a big JTQ fan for some album ideas.

Can you recommend a good Mother Earth album or two (or eight)?

I will be flying out to San Francisco after work on Thursday and will be perusing the large selection of music available at Amoeba Music and Rasputtin Music in Berkeley and S.F.  These places will most likely have whatever you recommend.
