some of the song names i dont know, but you probably wont like naval aviation in art? its one of his post modern pieces in the boulez style of chamber music orchestration.

However, the song has lots of weird little noises in it, so depending on how the 5.1 is mixed, it might make an otherwise difficult song pretty interesting...

I cant even imagine what waka/jawaka 5.1 would sound like

Maybe it\'s about time I got into this stuff.  I\'ve been liking the PB covers for the last 4-5 years so I should consider some "gateway" albums.

Suggestions?

I think I hear an album with the words "Orchestra" built somewhere into the title.

your thinking of london symphony orchestra vols 1 and 2. definetly NOT a gateway album.  Heres my humble list.

best choices in no paticular order, based on songs pb covers:
Roxy and elsewhere
Joes Garage
(\') Apostrophe
Over-Nite Sensation
We\'re only in it for the Money
Freak Out!

oh yea. thats a great one. orchestral favorites was taped in a high school gym if I\'m thinking of the right show. It was a \'first attempt\' at orchestral music with a full ensemble, which would eventually lead to 200 motels creation (which is the album with mystery roach and Magic Fingers on it).

Irronically, flo and eddie were in attendance and walked up to frank afterwards and said "we like what you do. We just broke up the turtles. Do you want to play together?" Frank hired them on the spot, and such was re-born the mothers of invention.

I think orchestral favorites is one of the best albums. That version of strictly genteel is one of my favorites.

oh, interesting... Love so many of the players on GW... George Duke, Sal Marquez, etc.. who will be on the (petite? petty? ;) ) version I wonder? Woodwinds, yes or no?

I thought you had already mentioned waka/jawaka. Probably more interesting, less "slick" (know what I mean? perhaps I should have written overly polished-sounding) than G.W.

Anyhow, I suppose probably neither is a good "gateway" album. But still, a side of him that needs to be heard. Ser composing, ser improv, ser jazzy players.

Perhaps I\'ll get shot down for suggesting this, but I have used "Strictly Commercial" and "Have I Offended Someone" to get people into fz. OK, so they\'re compilations, but for the casual listener, they\'re a good introduction.

Three of my favourites are Freak Out,  Burnt Weeny Sandwich and We\'re Only In It For The Money though I suppose I\'ve always been more of a Mothers fan, rather than fz solo.

...I couldn\'t stay outta a FZ convorsation for this long.

The \'You Can\'t Do That Onstage Anymore\' series of 2-CD live compilations by The Man himself are great introductions.  There\'s 6 of \'em to choose from spanning his entire carrer and he dedicates them to his bands.  Vol. 2 is a complete show from Helsinki in \'74 (?) with the infamous \'Roxy\' band.
the \'Strictly Commmercial\' compilation kinda sucks, stay away (i.e. edited versions of Yellow Snow and Joe\'s Garage)  I\'m fortunate enough to have the old \'two-fer\' disc of \'Apostrophe/Overnite sensation\' which both albums are good starting points as well.

I bought "We\'re Only In It For The Money" and "Hot Rats" at the same time.  I got "Strictly Commercial" as a gift, and I found "Cheap Thrills" in a used bin for $3.99.  I\'m awaiting "Roxy and Elsewhere" and "Cruising with Ruben and the Jets" from Amazon right now.
