The NEW "Stretch Run/Postseason" Baseball Thread [MERGED]

About 5 weeks ago I was talking with a downtrodden Yankee-fan friend who was worried becasue the Sox were catching up.  I told him not to worry, that the only reason things were getting closer was so that the Yankees could clinch the AL East in Fenway Park during this series.  Well, we\'re two games away from seeing that one come true.  Imagine the Yankees celebrating their division title right in front of all the Sox fans.  1978 anyone?

I\'m going to the game tonight and feel nothing.  What am I rooting for?  For nobody to get hurt?  For Rodriguez v. Vartiek II?  For the Mets?

Here\'s something weird to consider, although it can\'t happen:  Imagine the Yankees come into Boston, sweep the Sox, and clinch the division in the last game.  At the same time, the Sox clinch the wild card due to Anaheim losing.  Do the Sox celebrate on the field?  Do the Yankees?  Do the fans cheer at the end of the game due to clinching a playoff berth?  Do both teams have champagne in the locker room?  Remember, the Sox went pretty crazy last year for just clinching the wild card.  It would certainly be a funny situation.

My Cubs World Series prediction just took a major hit as the Mets beat them 4-3 in 11 innings. The Mets were down to their last strike trailing 3-0 in the ninth before Victor Diaz hit a three-run blast to tie it. Then, in the 11th, Craig Brazell homers to win it. Who are Victor Diaz and Craig Brazell, you ask? They\'re either the future of the Mets or members of the Major League Baseball Witness Relocation Program. Either way, the Mets are fucked for the future and the Cubs are fucked today.

HOW BOUT THEM AMAZINS!!!

Wolfman,

How was your Red Sox/Yankees experience last night?

I\'m sure the was a large percentage of meatheads as usual since Massachusetts is the breading ground for dumb, shithead guys (Actually it may be the most of Southern New England)

OK The Angels just took the A\'s 2 outta 3 to pull within 1 game of the Division lead but they suspended Jose Guillen for inappropriate conduct hmmm?  So The Angels still in it and if the Cubs keep self destructing The Pads may stumble into the wild card over in the Senior circuit. Sweet!!!!!!!!!!!

Ok... who watched the game last night?..... buncha fuckin juveniles out there... tension was high, I know, but come on guys....

First of all, Lofton (I think?) elbowing Mientkiewicz (spelling anyone!?) was TOTALLY unnecessary. Yeah, he was takin up a lot of the base, BUT, for gods sake the out was made way before Lofton got to base, so the elbow was really stupid.

Even more stupid was Astacio retaliating and throwing the ball behind Lofton at his next at bat. Of course he was pissed, but there\'s no reason to stoop to that level.

Worst of all was that Yankee pitcher (forget his name, sorry) throwing that ball RIGHT UNDER Robert\'s chin. Throwing behind someone is bad. Aiming for their head is dangerous; if he hadn\'t tipped his head back fast enough it woulda cracked him right in the jaw. That really pisses me off.

Question for those who know more than I do: Why was Torre ejected but not Francona? There must be some sort of mandatory rule that I am unaware of.

Well, we won anyhow. Good prediction Pitch! Boston battig was pretty serious the last 2 games....

Torre was ejected because Halsey (?), the pitcher who threw at Roberts, did so AFTER both benches had been warned.  I actually didn\'t know that rule either, but that\'s the explanation I learned from the wonderful commentators at the YES network.

Is it just me, or does Arroyo occasionally look just a little bit like Aruny? (Of course Jon\'s hairdo is much more stylish, but...)

Tonight Arroyo gets to duel Scott Kazmir, a lefty the Mets dealt to Tampa two months ago for a shoulder-surgery-in-waiting named Victor Zambrano. He shut down the Sox two weeks ago. Kazmir, not Zambrano. He shut down his career the day he moved to Flushing, which is an appropriate name for the home of the Mets. Sox win 5-3.
