I don\'t think I\'ve been right since 1918, but I\'ll enjoy watching Wells if he gets blown up, even if it\'s by the Yankees

METS TURN DOWN RED SOX OFFER OF MANNY FOR FLOYD

By Adam Rubin
New York Daily News

For most of the winter, the Mets have been chasing Boston ace Pedro Martinez. Last night, the Red Sox\'s other big star practically fell in their lap, but they weren\'t interested.

Boston, wanting to free up money to sign Edgar Renteria and Carlos Delgado, offered World Series MVP Manny Ramirez to the Mets for Cliff Floyd. They were rebuffed, and a Mets insider said the deal is highly unlikely to be revisited, because of the salary owed to Ramirez.

A Met insider said in addition to Ramirez\'s hefty contract - which has four years and $77 million left on it - there are other factors that would make them reluctant to bring Manny to Shea. Floyd, who has $13 million coming to him over the next two seasons, is someone the Mets are looking to deal, but not at that cost. Mike Piazza was also included in the dialogue between the Mets and Red Sox, but that went nowhere.

And while it looks like Martinez could be heading back to Boston, they have a backup plan in Dodger pitcher Odalis Perez. GM Omar Minaya said he has offers out to two starting pitchers, and a Mets insider said Perez was the other recipient of a bid in addition to Pedro.

Martinez continues to seem a near-lock to return to the Red Sox, though Minaya reiterated yesterday: "The fact we\'re in dialogue means we\'re still alive."

Pedro Martinez = Met

On one hand, a four year deal is a bit long for a 33 year old with a rotator cuff thinner than pre-steroids Jason Giambi...

But on the other hand, if the Mets were thinking about the 2008 season right now, they wouldn\'t have signed Pedro at all.

I guess I\'m not happy that he is no longer a Red Sox, but I\'m pleased that we didn\'t offer a deal that we shouldn\'t have offered just to keep him.

Now that I\'ve said my piece, RANT ON Pitch!

I originally was not in favor of this move considering the fact that I\'ve always hated Martinez\'s guts. But the bottom line is that he\'s immediately the Mets ace once he signs on the dotted line. They have to replace Leiter and this obviously does more than that. They still should have signed Leiter and dumped Glavine, but overall, this is a good signing. I still hope somebody beans Pedro just so he gets a taste of his medicine. Then I hopes he beans the best player on the team that beans him. If you\'re gonna have Pedro, better use him for what he\'s best at: INTIMIDATION. And now that he has a World Series ring, I have a fair amount of confidence of him in the big spot. So good job Mets, finally. They still have to push hard for a slugging outfielder or first baseman, work on trading Floyd and Piazza, and solidify their bullpen. They may be a playoff contender next year, but I\'ve been down this road before and won\'t make any statements until I see the roster on April 1.

As far as the Sox role in the move, they had better pursue some legitimate righty to offset this, or else it\'s one of the worst moves, both from a strategic and public relations standpoint, in the history of sports. But then again, I thought the same about the Nomar trade, so who knows? Still though, you have to smile if you\'re a Mets fan today and cringe a bit if you\'re a Sox fan. Maybe Pedro will smoke bowls with his little buddy in the top hat at Shea.

Speaking of the Cardinals, they lost the World Series to the World Champion Boston Red Sox.

Let\'s see. You win a title with Orlando Cabrera as one of your best hitters. Then you refuse to sign Cabrera and sign another shortstop, who was on the team you beat in the World Series. Hey, what\'s another 86 years between championships?

RENTERIA AGREES TO FOUR-YEAR DEAL WITH CHAMPS

BOSTON -- All-Star shortstop Edgar Renteria told The Boston Globe he has agreed to a $40 million, four-year contract with the Red Sox, the paper reported on its Web site Wednesday.

Renteria, who played for St. Louis for the past six years, made the final out in Boston\'s World Series sweep of the Cardinals. He has a .289 career average and is a four-time All-Star and two-time Gold Glove winner.

Reached by the paper at his home in Colombia, Renteria said the World Series champions made the best offer.

"I like to play on a winning team like Boston, St. Louis or any team that has the opportunity to win,\'\' he was quoted as saying. His decision came down to the two pennant winners, and he said the Red Sox were "more interested in my playing for them.\'\'

Renteria replaces fellow Colombian Orlando Cabrera, who was acquired in a late-season trade and played a key role in Boston\'s championship run.

His contract also includes an option for 2009.
