the Dead in Hartford
« on: August 04, 2004, 11:26:58 am »
went up to Hartford last night with Tim to try to do some promotion for the Cafe 9 shows, but all i can say is the crowd that goes to the Dead shows are all, for the most part, washed up and drugged up. Its not like im new to these crowds, but last nights just seemed more pathetic than ever. Hope the Breakfast dont appeal to too many of these kids. Of all the music scenes to set an example you think this would be the one. Im all about havin a good time, but half the people commin out of the show were trippin so hard and so messed up, they looked like the flyer scared them (or they were pissed it was no longer \'psychedelic\' breakfast) when i approached them with it. And of course you see them all over the ground too. I just didnt get it. And there was about honestly 50 people selling \'veggie\' this and \'veggie that\' outside the gate...and everyone of them was yelling for about 2 hours to sell their shit. nothing more annoying. Real jobs arent that bad. The Dead should just face the fact that things aint what they used to be, and the little \'hippie culture\' they set out to create has just dwindled into a reason to abuse drugs and be a hippocritical lot rat that loves to complain about the system but are too f\'d up all the time to do anything about it. Music is best.

PS . wolfie..this does not mean i dont want you bringin your cooler of sam adams and burritos to cafe 9 though.

Whatever. Did you go into the show or did u just hangout outside waiting to give people flyers ?

I take great offense to your comments. I am part of that "hippie culture" as you put it. You sound like an ass.

Now now, let\'s play nice.  This is no way to represent your culture.  Doc didn\'t like the scene that night and you disagree, fine.  The two of you probably did not even interact with any of the same people.

I plan on selling veggie burritos and my new special SPAM BURRITOS at Cafe Nine.  First night only, I can\'t attend the second night.  I am not dealing tickets for this show, so Steve, looks like you\'re gonna have to pay face value from the website.

i should have said \'neo hippie culture\'.  The Dead are a great band, its just too bad there isnt a common respect for people around you and the venue as much as there is for the music.

the show.....i had a great time. the show was really good all night with some stronger moments. the first set took off with mr. charlie, weather report suite, let it grow and deal to end. this was inmo the best portion of the night. second set was good with, inmo, gloria of all things being the highlight of the set. eyes for the encore was rather weak but nicely segued into night of a thousand stars.

the band.....i thought everyone played well. phil was a bit understated but certainly is driving the band. i thought weir had a really good night. the drumming was steady if a bit unspectacular.jeff chiamanti on keys was fine but certainly not memorable.  jimmy herring seems more incredible to me everytime i see him. when i need a jerry riff, he\'s where i find it although he doesn\'t spend all night trying to be jerry (aka known as something he\'s not). more than warren, i think he finds jerrys groove a little better. that said, warren was incredible. certainly the best musician up there......and i want him out. this band should have rob barraco on keys and vocals and jimmy herring on guitar so they can be a real band and write songs and tour and all that stuff. warren can be the most special of many guests while actually being IN his other bands.
that\'s just my take. i don\'t have any interest in touring with this band and not much interest in the next setlist. i cain\'t really explain it. i did have fun...... but i\'d rather be a cafe 9 for 10 bucks since my coventry comes labor day weekend ;)
