The Dying Room 7/16
« on: July 01, 2004, 03:05:22 am »
We\'ve gone over how much the Dying Room sucks a lot on this forum.  People piss on the wall right next to the band.  Old men show up drunk and grope girls.  It is smelly, dirty, and in a slum that nobody wants to go to.  The sound is the worst the band has ever had.  The lights don\'t work at all.  The enitre building is decaying, and it is noticably worse every time the band plays there.  Several long-time fans of The Breakfast wrote that they had the worst time ever at a Breakfast show the last time here and wanted to just leave in the middle of the show.  This venue might be good for high school bands who will settle for any gig, but it makes a band like The Breakfast look like a joke.

It\'s time for everyone to boycott this venue.  This is for the band\'s benefit as well as the fans.  The band has played here about fifteen times over nearly four years and the crowds have never grown.  This venue has done nothing to support the band in the Providence market.  Half the crowd at every show is people who drive in from out of state.  If we ser fans send the message that nobody wants to go here, the band will understand that they really need to move up in the world.  Then they can play a venue in Providence that will actually draw some new people from Providence, and we will get to watch the band in a room that is not collapsing and covered in urine.

There\'s no right or wrong, but if you care about whether or not the band progresses in the world, I don\'t see how you can support them playing this venue.  If you saw the reviews of people saying what a bad time they had here last time, ask yourself why you would go back.  I did not go to the last Dying Room show and I\'m not going to this one.

Providence has turned into a pathetic music town.   What once was a good little market, is now crap.   I live here, and I am saddened by the state of live music in this great little city.

True, the Living Room sucks, but maybe the boyz are being told "no" by the other places.  (The Call needs to happen but they try to book bigger-name bands)

I think it\'s important that PB gets a foot in the door at The Call, but certainly you can blame it on the lame music scene here, and all over the place, that PB is not a bigger draw than they are.  WTF is wrong with people?

True, but not really. My friend\'s roomate\'s band, Fungus Amungus, gets booked at The Call to headline all the time, and they are not that good at all, they are not even in the same league as the boys. I\'ve seen them headline The Call on a Friday night and a Saturday before (not a run, different times). But in your defense they do book some decent names (the bigger ones have been going to Lupos/Strand as far as I remember, I havent been in Providence since ealry May). But what I don\'t get is how PB can co-bill a gig with AGP at the Webster (yea, so what the Webster is in CT), and AGP can get The Call and get a huge turnout there, yet the boys can\'t get The Call??

Great point Anthony.  As with any other business, let\'s judge The Breakfast by their competition.  Their main peers are AGP, Umphrey\'s, Particle, and Raq.  Would any of these bands ever be caught dead in the Dying Room?  Hell no.  If we were the crew for one of these bands going to Providence, we would be going dowtown to a nice venue where our band would sound great and we could have a great time.  But no, we\'re Breakfast fans, we get to go to a slum and literally wallow in urine while our band sounds like a 2 hour donkey fart.  What is that?

If you can play a place 4 times in 1 year and not see any increase in crowd, then there is a problem with either the band or the venue.  The problem is clearly not the band...

When is this going to end?  15 shows in 4 years is way too much of a sample.  The crowds have not grown at all and they never will.  When do they give up on this shithole...after 30 shows in 8 years?  Do you think the band should still be playing here in 2 years?  I said no to that question 4 years ago.

People, do not support this show.  This is for everyone\'s benefit. If the band gets a new venue then people out here don\'t have to go to this pit anymore.  If the band grows their fanbase and paychecks (which will never happen at Dying Room), then fans across the country will get more shows because the band will be able to afford to travel more.  We\'ve all put way too much into this to accept settling for mediocrity, so don\'t support it.

I went to the Dying Room once back in the day.  I cannot believe that someone hasn\'t literally died in there.  The place is for one, a health risk sanitarily speaking, but as a structure itself, its only a matter of time before a wall callopses and crushes some spinning hippies....

I am all for a downtown providence show....would it be fare to say the 3 biggest things in booking a music gig would be scene, scene,  scene....a la the ole saying about real estate..."location location location".....

Let\'s get a Western Mass gig guys!!!!!  Some sort of co-bill with Raq

its not that bad. if they did end up getting a new pa system then its worth putting up with everything else. just make sure no one slips roofies in your drink and you will have a good time.

good point chris, but even as a joke, any venue that some says what you just said is not a serious concideration. I have to agree with seth on this one. I dont get to go to many shows anymore, so I pick and choose them based on my schedule and location. I\'m not going to go out of my way for the living room. I\'ve dumped enough $$ into there over the years.

on a side, Tim and Ron are managing the band. Rons still on honeymoon/just getting back, so Tim has been managing the band. The bands also in studio. Tims also going gigs all over with ian and now megans band, so he\'s pretty busy lately. Although I dont agree with the venue, chances are Tim booked it becuase he didnt have time to hastle with getting a new venue, and the living room offered him a date. <-just a guess

I for one will not be going. I dont even know if I can make it to cafe 9 :holyshit:

it is considerably local (with casino stop on the way home) and has an anything goes policy...which unfortunatley means piss where you want to some people, but i dont think im goin back there unless the new pa system is in full effect. i hat to see Dobson in such dissarray while at work

Good point.  I\'ve gotta cut them some slack here because there\'s no manager.  That doesn\'t make the venue any better, but it\'s tough to get all over them for this gig when they\'re just trying to scrape by on the venues they know until they get a manager who can hook up the better gigs.  So I\'ll give them a pass for this gig only.  If they ever play here again after this one, that will be sad.

??? I\'m confused.  There is a show at the Dying Room in 10 days.  It\'s been up on the band\'s site and jambase and the pbfans calendar for weeks.  I\'m confused.  I\'ll probably see you on the boat with Umphrey\'s though!!  I\'m hittin the boat this Friday too for Amon Tobin.  He\'s one of my 3 favorite DJ\'s.

this show is NOT on the bands website nor did i see it on jambase (i didn\'t check today) it is on this boards calender but i didn\'t notice that right away as i usually use thebreakfast.net for the schedule. it won\'t be hard to boycott if nobody knows about the show.....someone should call the guitar player or the bass player or the manag....oh shit.....that won\'t work.....also i\'m working on the 16th so i don\'t know yet about umphrey\'s.....but i\'ll be trying

Everything at the Call has been a failure..... The Providence music scene is just plain WEAK now.  So the Call barely has anybody because it\'s a losing proposition.  Bands might play there once, but if the turn-out stinks they won\'t be back.   AGP -- how many times have they booked it?  Probably once.

A big draw like Reid Genauer and the AOD can fill \'er up, but the Call knows that the Breakfast cannot draw people off their stupid ass and get in to see a show.

PB is stuck in Providence la-la land.

In fact they are facing this situation in many places I bet.  People just don\'t support live music.
