Just killin a bit of time this morning....

I wanted to hear some of your thoughts on this......

The top 5 essential albums in your music collection

Here are mine in no real order

1. Derek and The Dominoes - Layla and Other Assorted Love Songs
2. Brad - Shame
3. Blind Melon - Blind Melon
4. Sublime - Robin\' The Hood
5. Ernest Ranglin - Below The Bassline

Now obviously we all have different tastes and influences, and 5 records, a collection does not make.
But I just flashed back in my life and picked out 5 that, at different points in my life, have had a serious influence on my feelings about music and life in general....

peace

I picked 5....Dblock picked 5
Yes its hard, but thats the fun of it....
you are forced to leave out many and just pick 5 albums that you would consider "essential"....
Thats what makes it a top 5 list....

sorry.  I am just being a pain in the ass.....

Much better Evelyn, BUT, lets not disparage anyones selections (I.E. The Boss)....
I dont want this to become a heated debate about who is more essential.....
I was looking to find out what kind of music has and is influencing the group....

sorry i can\'t control myself. the truth is (i must confess) i saw bruce several times, and he puts on a great performance (over 4 hrs) and wrote some pretty down home lyrics about growing up, getting your heart broken and finding love (even if it was in the back of a chevy.......).

Thank you Evelyn.  I think that everyone should be forced to go to a Bruce show
(pause for groans) before they can rank on the Boss.  Even if someone doesn\'t
like Springsteen recorded history, which I can see someone saying, because the
first two albums weren\'t the most rocking and Born in the USA was a commercial
disaster, the live show will tell a totally different story to the music.  I
don\'t believe in the phrase of either you like him or you don\'t when it comes
to Springsteen\'s music.  There are many elements that make him one of the most
successful music artists of our time.

1 Test of Time - He\'s been performing and making new music with the E-Street
band or members of the E-Street Band since the late 60\'s.

2 His band -
Max Weinberg - Musical director for Late Night with Conan O\'Brien
Nils Lofghren - Recored and toured with many musicians such as Neil Young
and The Ringo Star All-Star Band.
Clarence Clemens - Now who hasn\'t heard of the big man
Danny Sancious (Former piano player) - Toured with Peter Gabriel for many
     years.

3 Live Performance - The man is plus 50 years and is still putting on over 3
hours shows.  That may not seem like a long show to fans of jamb bands, but for
someone who write 3 minute songs and plays close to 30 songs a night.  And to
be completely hones, I can\'t explain a show to you, because it\'s different
everytime, but I\'ll say this.  I had tickets to see the Who and passed on that
to see Bruce.  That night he played a tune that he hadn\'t played in over 22
years.

There are many of things that I could say and would last for at least another
two pages, so I\'ll leave it at that.  But it was part of my top 5 because I\'m
from New Jersey and I have a special kinship with the music that he writes.

I don\'t think i could decide on a top 5.  I\'ve always
loved 80\'s pop (easy rock included), metal, new wave
etc; classic rock, motown hits, ozzie, madonna, MJ,
chili peppers, weezer,  punk/emo, marley + underground
reggae from the caribbean.  I do like present day rap,
r&b, and pop hits too.  I\'m sure most of this list
probably won\'t say the same but all these types of
music get me moving.  I just don\'t have jam bands in
my roots but really love PB and Junta (disk 1) by
Phish.  Other than Junta, I like selective Phish.  I
basically love every PB song with the exception of
Beef Barley.  There are plenty of other categories of
music i like too and have never jumped on the
bandwagon for any particular scene.  PB essentially
brought me to the jam scene but I have no other jam
band interests and probably would never go out of my
way to see any of the shows listed on jambase or
jambands.  I would see Phish if they do tour in the
future though.  I think the combination of amazing
music and unprecedented good vibes sold me on PB from
the moment I set foot in Butterfield in 1999 with Seth
Wolfman.  We knew they were amazing and wondered why
we\'d never heard of them.
I now have dozens of road trips and shows to my credit
and PB has helped define many of my college memories.
I miss the excitement of travelling out of state to PB
shows on school nights then returning home for only a
couple hours of sleep before class (I have 4 finance
classes this semester that are keeping me in Amherst).
PB united me with people in Baker and throughout
UMass and gave us common ground for friendships that
may have been unlikely otherwise.  Hope we get PB at
Quadfest again this year as there is a huge group of
new students that have yet to experience the East
Haven magic.  See you all soon.

I think putting a \'best of\' in a top five isn\'t allowed. they\'re no mre an album then I could put together and burn from my very own Springsteen collection .

use your imagination, not a "best of" but how about albums that have MOST inspired u personally, say as a musician. Or MOST poignant for highlights in your life;  ex. Deuce just came out last summer but it was SO good i listened over and over and then listened to the first PB over and over again , their live CD\'s and try to see them as often as possible because the music and friends i\'ve met are addictive. u can just feel that something magic is going on - i haven\'t been this intoxicated w/ music since i followed the dead around -and i make no comparisons. It\'s a challenge to narrow it down. I think my 5 are different today than yesterday but that\'s the fun of it  :-)  peace

I know what it meant by list list, I was just saying that \'best of\' or \'greatest hit\'s\' aren\'t really albums ya know what I mean? like I said i could burn a zappa mix cd but it\'s not an album.  A greatest hits is like the same but a record company puts it out.  when someone says "whats your favoite album (s)?", I immdiately think of ones I like to litsen to front to back (for the most part).  some albums are a statement and aren\'t complete if the songs are seprated (Pink Floyd-Darkside, FZ-We\'re Only in it For the Money), but also those are sometimes called \'concept albums\'.  Ever hear a track from DSOTM on a Floyd greatest hit\'s (Works?) it always gives me an unfinished feeling and i always think I\'m gonna hear the next one off of Darkside and it\'s dissapointing when you dont...anyone hear me out on this?

yeh, i know what you\'re saying (Blues for Allah and Tommy also come to mind) "greatest hits" and "best of" don\'t count.  They are merely a record co. or exec. who capitalize for quick profit on an already done deal. like those enron bastards....don\'t get me started!!!!

In my opinion....

I was thinking top 5 albums in your collection that have had the greatest influence on....
-your life
-your musical taste/personality

So any album that you could buy from
Tommy to Neil Diamonds Greatest Hits count in my book.....

I like greatest hits albums.  they pack in a lot of
good songs (usually) and the record companies make a
lot of money then pump much of it back into the
economy.

Z,
I agree.  Not only does it pack thes but sometimes it adds rare.

example: Bruce(of course)
1. It put all those radio hits that we grew up with
2. Some tunes that weren\'t really radio hits but he felt should be on the ALBUM.
3. He felt that he wanted to add something extra so after 11 years, he called
the original band back together to record some new stuff.
4. Streets of Philadelphia, a song that you could only get on the Soundtrack to
   the movie.

So I guess that this disproves that Greatest Hits or Best myth that it\'s just a
money making scam.  Sometimes the artist actually wants to produce the album.
If it\'s selling out or not it\'s still a good idea.

Plus a lot of times people buy the greatest hits album for one tune and then
realize that there are a bunch more that they like and go out and buy the rest
of the music that artist has written and recorded.

OK...top 5\'s in no particular order....

I had such a hard time picking my top 5 essential albums!!!  (as I\'m sure
everyone did) ...but it really has me rolling around in some memories here...
(good top 5 topic Stephen)  It\'s so amazing how music accompanies life...
Ever wish you could go back and play the soundtrack of your life?  like
even stuff you used to listen to when you were watching sesame street....
(come on... you all know the 123  4 5  678  9 10  1112 song when the little
marble was rolling along the tracks...)  through the tv or radio commercial
songs that just stuck in your head like the Mentos song or chili\'s baby back
ribs... through the Michael Jackson stage and up to the present day live PB
show.... I would love to have a copy of that soundtrack!!!!)
anyway...got sidetracked...These are 5 of the all time most essential
albums in my collection... each one reminds me of a specific times/stage of
my life...

Beck - Odelay
Led Zepplin - Disc Two of the box set
REM - Automatic for the People
Beatles - Sgt. Pepper
Phish - Junta - Disc One

Top 5 Artists I Would Like to Disappear from Musical History:

Michael Bolton
George Thorogood
Celine Dion
Vanilla Ice
John Tesh

Dave, dave, dave?!!! How can you possibly put OK Computer in there, AND above Rift??

It seems to me that half the US really got brainwashed by that miserable caca of a band called Radiohead.

Have had to think long and hard about my top 5. Presented in alphabetical and therefore no particular order of merit are the five albums I can always listen to:

a) American Beauty - Grateful Dead (This had to be in there - might have to agree further with marcial though and include some sci ;) , so
b) Born On The Wrong Planet - SCI
c) From Genesis To Revelation - Genesis
d) From Home to Home - Fairfield Parlour
e) Hoist/Rift - Phish (though I could cite any pre-hiatus Phish album)

Bela Fleck and the Flecktones - Live Art
Medeski Martin and Wood - Friday Afternoon in the Universe
Phish - A Live One
Jurassic 5  - Quality Control
Dave Brubeck - We\'re All Together Again For the First Time

Interestingly, 3 out of 5 are live albums.  Also, 3 out of 5 have no words, and A Live One has very few words at all.
