Man, they gotta bring back opening sets with jams into a song.  Was just listening to 7/19/2 and the 10 minute jam into LDZ is phenomenal.  These jams would always rip and set the tone for the set.  Listen to 5/5/1 jam > Sundance, it\'s awesome.  Totally gets me into the show more than radio edits of Dig and Fiery Ball. (aka "The Formula")

What would you rather hear to open a set, a 10 minute jam into a song, or quick versions of 2 or 3 tunes?

back in the day, they were opening every set with "jam".. it got old. great at some points, but it just got to be too tired and unoriginal. it\'s been a while though.. i think there\'s a happy medium to be found somwhere, and i\'d like to see them back every once in a while..

I liked it when they used to open with a jam >something, but it did get old having it almost every show... sometimes you just want them to get up there & pull out a Drunk Monk or similar to get things started,  but instead would get a 10min, spacey, jam.

Why does it have to be all or nothing though?  I would like to see it come back every now & then.  I would say that it is better than "The Formula"... unless it\'s a song that I\'m not too crazy about (a la Beef Barley or GBFBITS)... then I like "The Formula" because I don\'t have to hear a 20min version of that song half way through 2nd set.

They played an awesome jam 5/24/02 at the Lion\'s Den into Wake Up in a Coma....Timmy was going nuts!  The jam was only like 2 minutes or so, but def set the tone for the rest of the set.  Wouldn\'t want to hear a 10 minute opening jam all the time, but every once in a while would be cool.....

When they played the Mercury Lounge last time, Adrian started jamming along with the track that the DJ was playing before their set. Tim picked up on it and started playing along. For a moment it looked like they were going transition into their set but then Tim seemed to lose interest and went back to fiddling with his rig.

Definitely best to mix it up. That way you get a feel for the mood that the band is in that night.

The Jam> was a PB staple for a while, and I loved it.  But I would go along with Marcial and say "why does it have to be all or nothing".

I am hoping that a this point in the Breakfast\'s existance, they are compiling their setlists based on how they feel that particular night versus sticking to some kind of "formula"....

hey, helluvahat, was that the jam that went into Wake up In a coma?? if so i think it has been dubbed the \'out of the gates\' jam by Fred because thats the way you should come out and get shit goin. The guy introduces the band and BAM!! I think the spacey  jams are great but should be used sparingly.

It makes sense that when in a new area they probably play "the formula" because it would be easier for new people to get into. Something they recognize as opposed to a far out jam. Once you have the people\'s interest then you can pull out all the tricks.

Regulars can be toyed with from the start.

It\'s not that they don\'t interest peopl, it\'s just that... if it\'s a crowd of newbies, sometimes you really do need to do something to get the crowd bumpin right from the start, know what I mean? Once you\'ve soarked some enthusiasm then you can take it out a bit... The "far out" jams are great, but, not always the best way to draw people in who are unfamiliar with the band. Mainly because, a lot of people have really terrible taste in music....

In that case the band should open with SCORE every night.....
