Hello everybody

The judging works like this:

We all eat a slice of each and vote for which tasted better overall. Whoever gets the most of these votes wins and moves on. But we also, for no reason other than statistics, judge which of the two places has the best sauce, the best dough and the best cheese. This way, at the end of the tournament, you could say something like Sally\'s (just for an example) won the tournament. But they also had a sauce record of 44-5, a cheese record of 38-11, etc. This way we know why certain places win or lose. But you\'re right. The sum is more important that the parts. Even though BAR won 2 of 3, Modern\'s apizza won because it had the ingredients come together better and that was what stimulated enough taste buds and gave Modern my vote and the victory. But BAR needn\'t be ashamed. They made a great pie. It was as tight  a decision as I\'ve had to make (involving pizza anyway) and was a great contest between two of the area\'s heavyweights. Now Modern vs. Sally\'s in the quarterfinals. Whew.

Anyway, thanks for taking an interest.

Chris Pitch

By the way, regarding my suspension....

BULLSHIT
MOOSEDUNG
KANGAROOMANURE
RHINOFECES
PANDADOODY
RATCRAP
GUPPIEPOO

In other words, an utter outrage. Ah, it\'s all politics. Thank Maturo for that one. By the way Dave, who voted in favor of me, knowing that my suspension would not be warranted since I was simply showing off my ginzo expertise, and not displaying bias since I obviously have just one ass.

Pitch

PS-I cannot verify this, but there are rumors circulating that the Nicotine Smokers Union of Staven will be sponsering their own tournament to "rival" ours. Can anyone confirm or deny these reports that I plucked off the grapevine?

It is common knowledge that nicotine smokers are not allowed to judge in the tournament due to the fact that it "negatively affects their palate," according to Dave Pec, Hostmaster of the SuperHaven Apizza Tournament. Fortunately the Pot Smokers Union of Staven is allowed to judge, which is good considering that I don\'t think Dave and Lisa would have much fun judging by themselves. Plus, you need an odd number people, which we have in more ways than one.

See yous

Hey Fred

I think it\'s a great idea. You should do the exact same tournament match-ups as us and see if it comes out the same, to see if great apizza is great apizza across the board, to see if the palate is actually "negatively affected" as so they claim. Pizza tournaments are obviously infectious to everyone so I fully understand your desire to get involved. I\'m with it.

Say, what say you guys have a side tournament in which you compare the pizzas with cigarettes cooked in. C\'mon, wouldn\'t a nice slice of Sally\'s plain go great with a fucking Salem 100? Or Pepe\'s with a Doral? Or Domino\'s with a clove? I think Antonio\'s in Mass makes the tabacco-stuffed crust, but only if you get it with fried bumblebees and an Atari 7800 controller.

But Fred, if you guys need a server, I\'m obviously available.

Yes, Antonio\'s does make a tobacco pizza.  If you ask for it "with extra veggies", they give you the secret shaker that looks like it has Italian spices, but it\'s actually cannibis flakes.  (It\'ll cost you an extra five bucks.)  The kids love it.

STAVEN APIZZA CHAMPION TAKEN OUT
« Reply #25 on: July 21, 2003, 09:01:19 am »
More first-round action of the 2003 SuperHaven Apizza Tournament took place at Dave Pec\'s on Sunday. We had ten people in attendance. Nine judges. One server. That would be me, sitting out my two-match suspension for (correctly) guessing the pizza places I voted for in the two previous first-round matches and displaying the guesses on my vote sheet.
My feelings on this matter have already been documented.

So this gave me a chance to serve the pizza, which provided me with a golden opportunity to tamper. Oddly, I opted not to tamper. I stuck to the plan, dished out the slabs, and away we go.

PAUL\'S DEFEATS GIUSEPPE\'S 7 to 2

Giuseppe\'s, which shocked many a Foxoner with its Cinderella run to victory in the 2002 Staven Tournament, was promptly bounced from the major leagues by Paul\'s, a fellow Stavener, and better yet, a Momauguin Stavener. Paul\'s also posted a strong showing in the Staven Tournament, blowing out supposed Main Street heavyweight Tolli\'s, then losing to eventual runner-up John and Maria\'s, which has yet to have its first-round match in this tournament. Anyway, seven of the nine judges felt that, overall, Paul\'s produced a better pie. I agreed. It was my favorite of the night. I am a Foxoner, but show no geographical bias when it comes to apizza. These are two of my favorites.
In the side statistics, Giuseppe\'s won the dough category and Paul\'s won the sauce and cheese categories.
Giuseppe\'s now has an overall record of 3-1 with a vote total of 20-10.
Paul\'s has an overall record of 2-1 with a vote total of 17-8.

ABATE\'S DEFEATS PERROTTI\'S 7 to 2

A matchup between two Wooster Street dark horses turned into a laugher. This was the first tournament appearance for either of these places. I had never eaten either of them and liked Abate\'s much better. So did everyone else as they won big overall and swept the dough, sauce and cheese categories. For the record, I had Perrotti\'s as a 5-1 favorite to win the tournament and Abate\'s as a 40-1 favorite. So much for word of mouth. Still, Perrotti\'s, while hardly a bad pizza, was my least favorite of the night. And that\'s the point of the tournament: places that are average by comparison are good nonetheless.

Although, to be honest, Perrotti\'s has to come up with something a little better if it expects to make it on that street.

But hey, I\'m no restauranter.

Chris Pitch

For the record...

FIRST-ROUND RESULTS

Modern 5, BAR 4
Sally\'s 9, Brazzi\'s 0
Paul\'s 7, Giuseppe\'s 2
Abate\'s 7, Perrotti\'s 2

FIRST-ROUND MATCHES

John and Maria\'s vs. Grand
Pepe\'s vs. Amity
Zuppardi\'s vs. Olde World
Spot vs. Tony and Lucielle\'s

QUARTERFINAL MATCHES

Sally\'s vs. Modern
Abate\'s vs. John and Maria\'s/Grand winner
Paul\'s vs. Pepe\'s/Amity winner
Zuppardi\'s/Olde World winner vs. Spot/Tony and Lucielle\'s winner

As always, it was a great time. Thanks to Dave, Tim, Justin, Aruny, Paul, Christine, Mike, Jackie and Jay.

Hope to see everyone again and more

I thoroughly proofread the entire post and fuck up the spelling of APPIZA in the subject. Well, it\'s like not the word apizza played an important role in regards to the post.

Thanks Dave, but please note that I wasn\'t really "up" at 9 in the morning. I was awake from the previous day. I guess I was worked up into such a frenzy as a result of placing slices of pizza in styrfoam plates and distrubting them to blindfolded people. Either that, or I was writing 3500 words worth of high school journalism brilliance. Or perhaps Paul\'s puts cocaine in the crust.

By the way, I feel "Cocaine in the Crust" is a great name for an album of a shit band.
