cnn and usa today are carrying the picture from the ct post of my company as we were arriving on the scene...we tried to get up on the highway going north but had to back down the ramp and as we were swinging around to the southbound side, we came upon that scene which was the underpass of the bridge. all the fuel was leaking underneath and creating a huge firestorm. it seemed like a good enough place to start so we turned in there. in that shot we have just hooked a hydrant and are about lay a line down howard ave. in the new haven register you can see where we stopped and started to stretch an attack line. it was really a pretty easy fire in that we were able to protect the surrounding buildings and just pour big water on the fire and the bridge. two things i will never forget. the huge I beams were just glowing red as could be and when they started to give (melt), the fuel on the highway began to cascade dramatically down into the underpass. it was a huge sheet of fire. the view of those beams after we put the fire out was pretty impressive....ironically, the biggest fire i ever worked was just two blocks down from there. anyway, it was something. i95 is gonna suck for a while
