Acoustic Guitar Advice Needed
« on: March 05, 2010, 07:54:55 pm »
Ok, so here\'s my problem. The folks got left some money and want to buy me a "quote" half decent guitar. I\'m tending towards another acoustic, to reflect my folkie, 60s and singer-songwriter tendencies, and to give my band a bit of variety in sound, but am in a quandrary over what to get as I\'d like something with a bit more of a contemporary feel to my Number 1 acoustic.

I already own a 30+ year old handmade Fylde Oberon acoustic, which I got for next to nothing when someone emigrated. It\'s lovely for open tunings and has a very full tone with a sustain which goes on forever, but is a bit of a one-trick pony - it\'s a bugger for prolonged strumming and flat-picking; the action makes it no good for lead work, but I\'m not taking a knife to it.

I\'m looking at probably $600-$800 and am currently considering Taylors, Takamines, Martins and Guilds, though could be persuaded otherwise. Anyone got any recommendations? I know it\'s very much apples and oranges and ideally I just need to go in to try them, but first, where do I start and then there are no stockists near me for 100 miles who sell Guilds, and also Martin electro-acoustic stockists are thin on the ground too.

Thanks in advance.

I think you will get the most for you money with a Takamine. I have an EG340C electric/acoustic I bought a few years ago for $299 w/ hard case, free shipping/no tax. I love it. I\'m sure there are some higher ends in the $500 range that would rip.

Boombox...

$600-$800 means you could maybe get a seriously low-featured Martin/Taylor if you\'re lucky. But like... for that money you could also get a really high end Ibanez acoustic with electric plugin pickup/EQ, cutaway body for high fret access, and like, all kinds of choices of wood grain and styles.

Obviously a thicker body will have more bass, a thin body will have finer definition, and somewhere in between is somewhere in between. Try them out and see what you like.

I have a flamed maple Ibanez acoustic/electic that cost about $600.

I like my necks fast and this leans more towards high-def than bassy. They make all types though. Here\'s mine. peace

Put the pointed pencil in the pepper-po and take a little sniff of the things below. :sadban:

http://newhaven.craigslist.org/msg/1630864006.html  ...or... I\'ve got a Washburn D-10 that I bought for $100.00 that\'s been hiking, camping, a friend sat on the neck and broke the headstock off at the scarf joint and separated the fretboard from the neck a bit.  Glued it back up and it works great.  It just sounds better and better!  The best thing I did was tear off the pickguard and remove the glue... really opened up the sound!  They\'ve got some nice higher end guitars that you\'d have to try out and see if you liked \'em.  They\'ve been building guitars since 1876, you\'re bound to learn something over all those years.   http://www.washburn.com/instruments/acoustics/ ...just a thought.

well... nevermind about the one on craigs, quite a drive from europe.  :)

Lois: What the hell?  Marilyn Manson?  Is that who\'s causing all this?  Peter: Yeah, it\'s all him or hers fault.  Who does he or she think he or she is?  Look, you can totally see his or her nipples.  That\'s obscene... maybe.  Lois: There\'s only one thing to do.  Peter: You\'re right.  We got to find this Marilyn Manson and I\'ve got to give that bastard or bitch a piece of my mind or penis.

Thanks for the advice so far, guys. I had thought about Ibanez or Ovation, but don\'t know the at all - def could be worth investigating, though Ovations seem to have rocketed in price in the last 10-20 years.

And Ken, I like your idea - what does Tim play these days?

Tim has been playing Babicz guitars for the last year, or so.
He may get violent if you swipe it though.
Ask freddiwaht to swipe it!

Well, been a while since I responded to the thread - work has blocked all vB based sites and I\'ve not had any time in the evenings to check in with one thing and another. Anyway, for those who might be wondering, I did finally get  a new baby - after trying well over a dozen guitars of different makes and models.

Takamines didn\'t do it for me due to the really glossy necks, a couple of Taylors sounded nice, but weren\'t comfortable, even after a short spell. Tried a very tempting used Guild D20 which nearly had me, but then in another shop tried a new Martin D15. Putting that one down was a wrench, but I knew a store which had some higher spec used Martins. Tried another Taylor there first, but it made my hand hurt after a couple of minutes - something weird about the neck profile and spacing didn\'t suit me.

Tried a number of different spec Martin D16s, which were all nice, but ended up buying a 10 year old used Martin 000C-16GTE in near mint condition (ie one literally 1 x 1mm dink in the back of the headstock).  I fell in love with it from the moment I picked it up, though it\'s hardly a classic model, having originally only been made at the turn of the millennium for a couple of years (lots more bass versions were made, but 6-strings are like hen\'s teeth which is reflected in the price, though at a grand, mine was £300 cheaper than the only other one I\'d seen for sale in the UK when I\'d done my pre-testing homework. It was also re-issued last year with a mic/pick-up blend system, but give me 10 years aging and a solid cedar, rather than "select hardwood", neck any day). Acoustically, she sounds lovely for just about every style, but when I plugged it in to a little Schertler amp in the shop... Here\'s the Martin page on the model: http://www.martinguitar.com/guitars/choosing/guitars.php?p=i&m=000C-16GTE Like I said, the D15 was a close call - guess I may be becoming a Martin afficianado.

So, my next task is to get some amplification for it - my Peavey Classic 30 doesn\'t do it justice and howls like a mutha if I crank it up. As I\'m on a budget ($450 tops), was thinking of a Behringer ACX1800, an Ashdown Radiator or one of the new Vox AGA70s which debuted at NAMM this year. Anyone got experience with acoustic amps, especially when you have to cope with a lead guitarist\'s 2x12 Peavey valve combo? (DI into the PA is not an option as we don\'t have one and generally the places we play only have a PA suitable for vocals.)

Nice pick with the Martin. And yes Classic 30\'s will howl when you plug in an acoustic and crank it :D   such a beautiful sound!
