not a chance Gary Matthews has ever hit .383.

.248/.325/.383 refers to batting average/on-base percentage/slugging percentage.

ahh yes. now THAT makes sense. whoops.
The crickets and the rust-beetles scuttled among the nettles of the sagethicket. "Vamanos amigos," he whispered, and threw the busted leather flintscraw over the loose weave of the saddlecock. And they rode on in the friscalating dusklight.  --Eli Cash

i don\'t think so. in fact, he was always in favor of testing. probably because he was naturally huge

David Ortiz was also in favor of testing... just being an argumentative douche.

Between the 1994 player\'s strike and juiced-up monsters (many of them first basemen) putting up big numbers shortly thereafter, Frank Thomas has kind of been erased from our collective memory. But the fact is that only 12 players have won back-to-back MVP awards, and the Big Hurt is one of them.

For a bonus gold star: Name the other 11 without looking it up. There is at least one for each position other than DH.

2. Bonds-LF
3. Murphy-CF
4. Schmidt-3B
5. Morgan-2B
6. Mantle-CF
7. Maris-RF
8. Berra-C

Damn. Have to look the rest up.

Not bad... consider half a gold star officially awarded.

P: Hal Newhouser
C: Yogi Berra
1B: Frank Thomas, Albert Pujols, Jimmie Foxx
2B: Joe Morgan
3B: Mike Schmidt
SS: Ernie Banks
LF: Barry Bonds
CF: Mickey Mantle
RF: Roger Maris
OF: Dale Murphy (I always thought of him as a right fielder, but he primarily played centerfield in his MVP seasons)

Still the best record in the NL and with the majority of their games left against Division opponents.
Pretty amazing season so far.

craziness - the Reds are poised to clinch the division and a spot in the playoffs for the first time in 10 years or so! They are losing right now but it could still happen tonight!
