Lois: What the hell?  Marilyn Manson?  Is that who\'s causing all this?  Peter: Yeah, it\'s all him or hers fault.  Who does he or she think he or she is?  Look, you can totally see his or her nipples.  That\'s obscene... maybe.  Lois: There\'s only one thing to do.  Peter: You\'re right.  We got to find this Marilyn Manson and I\'ve got to give that bastard or bitch a piece of my mind or penis.

I agree that violent drug cartels are a problem; however, if drugs were legal and regulated like alcohol is, drug cartels would not exist.  The problem today is similar to alcohol prohibition in the 1920\'s, but with more organization and profit motive.  People have always used drugs: Native American Peyote ceremonies, South Americans chewing coca leaf, Ayahuasca (DMT) ceremonies in the Amazon, ********* (psilocybin and amanitas), opium poppies, tobacco (unprocessed), cannabis, alcohol (wine in Christianity), *** in some hippie religion, and many more if I wanted to keep going.
Also, the drug cartels are not much of an issue if you look at what\'s going on right now around the world (Genocides and such).  Not saying that I support cartels, I make my own.  The gov\'t spends billions of dollars fighting an unwinable war (again think alcohol prohibition) and the media gobbles it up, but not much attention or money is paid to stop the massive killing and raping going on in Darfur and other such atrocities.
We spent a few years and tons of $$$ fighting poppy cultivation in Afghanistan; now there are several years worth of opium and heroin stockpiled for cartels to profit from.  The Taliban were AGAINST opium trade and cultivation (religious beliefs) until we went to war with them.  Now they use it as their primary source of income to buy weapons, soldiers, and loyalty.  All because of the huge profit involved.  How do we get rid of violent drug cartels?  We legalize all drugs, because drug abuse is a MEDICAL problem, not a criminal problem.  Violence is criminal, getting high is not.

One question, where do the drug cartels, U.S. street gangsters etc. derive an income if their drugs are legal and regulated?  Extortion?  More robberies/violent crime in other areas to make up for their dwindling drug incomes? kidnappings for ransom?

Or does the government tax drugs to the point that a black market still flourishes parallel to the legal one?

Lets face it, there are hundreds of thousands or more street thugs that will never legitimately work and will need an income, so what will they do if drugs are legal?

I want to know your thoughts.

hmmm, become street bums like everyone else without a job?

Extortion and more robberies/violent crime would be minimal--> little profit vs work+risk
Selling drugs right now = mega profit compared to work+risk
Where would thugs get $$ for expensive guns and ammo without highly profitable drugs to sell?  Organized crime break-ins would be much easier to stop than quiet drug transactions.  Plus with most of our law enforcement freed up from busting pot smokers and hippies at the CULM, they could go after the violent gangs, mobs, and cartels.  Put the dea to work on the streets to keep the peace, they\'re already para-military.

"Or does the government tax drugs to the point that a black market still flourishes parallel to the legal one?"

I\'d grow it in my garden and not worry about paying a fine for that, I do worry about being thrown in jail for that.  A black market exists for alcohol and tobacco because of the taxes, but not so much violence since they are legally available.

And we could set free the thousands and thousands of non-violent offenders from our *highly profitable* private prisons, and have plenty of room for the violent thugs you speak of.

nope, I love a good debate, whether I\'m wrong or right, discussion=win

Ken wtf so you love beer dude, we get it.

Lucky for you your favorite substance is legalized. I for one drink alcohol only because better alternatives are inconvenient and risky to obtain.

And what about pharmaceutical profits?  I would think that legal drugs are almost more f*ed up than illegal ones.  There is a huge profit margin, and the risks of using pills probably increases tenfold to the risk of smoking a joint.  I mean, have you ever heard some of those "side-effects lists" - they\'re much worse than whatever was the original problem!  Also, Ken, you can live your life how you want to...  but, just realize when it comes to other people and their beliefs, the last line in your quote sums it up best :D

We are infinetely far from perfect.

We are on an everlast quest to better ourselves and those around; to expand our own horizons, knowledge and conciounouess (though not spelling) to experince things and be at levels we can never dream of.

Drugs play no part in this.

Billy Mays pushed us by making us question why we would never use glue, nails, or screwdrivers when we could use mighty putty.
