whether you love guns or hate them is entirely irrelevant

Except you are probably a douchebag if you own a gun. And almost certainly a douchebag if you love guns.

Flame away libertarian Breakfast posse!

"You are probably a douchebag if you wear patchy clothes and say things like Brah, Deemsters, Headies And Almost certainly a Douchbag if you LOVE drugs"

See how that works.

Would you say the same to a person who lives out in the woods where there are bears and other potentially dangerous game around ? How about someone who lives out in the sticks where the closest police station was very far away. Or simply someone like Yoda who wants to make sure he can protect his family if god forbid he ever had to.

Your blanket statement says more about you then anything.

For the record. i do not own a gun. I know how to use them and have in the past (for target shooting) which by the way is pretty fun.

Good points, KindM\'S.  Glad someone else doesn\'t write off the 2nd amendment as merely plain stupid red state fun.  People are responsible for their own self preservation and cannot count on the police to be everywhere at every time (unless you are wealthy or have Congressional security paid by the taxpayer).

I think if you love guns, you are a douchebag is a pretty accurate blanket statement. Do you gun owners have guns because they help you get food, for safety, or other reasons that you feel it is necessary? If so, you probably don\'t revel in the act of killing, it\'s something to be done only out of however you define necessity. So I\'m guessing these people -- which are all the people you and everyone else with a gun is going to want point out as exceptions, maybe I missed some -- don\'t love guns. They have them because they need them for one reason or another. I\'m going to have to assume everyone here isn\'t a serial killer and therefore falls into this category of non-douchebags.

So that leaves people who love guns. Either you\'re a murderer or you have a serious gun collection. Or at least you must be pretty much down with violence if you love guns. So if that\'s you, sorry dbag.

Also, relax, it\'s just .info ... if I\'m bored at work and can\'t help but toss out some known flame bait with a blanket statement behind it, it\'s really not meant to be taken personally. Sometimes it\'s fun to exchange opinions on different things. Sometimes I agree with you, sometimes I don\'t. I\'m actually not sure if we\'ve met but I wouldn\'t assume great personality flaws based on a sometimes-different worldview.

We are now all worried about guns no longer swine flu?

Orthodox Jews in Israel do not call swine flu "swine flu" but rather Mexico Flu.

in general I\'m not too concerned about this, however, the possiblility of it spreading worldwide very fast is an obvious threat. that\'s just the way it is in our world of mass transit with air planes. disease can move globally faster than you can post numbers. Does that mean they are? no, but the threat is there. For someone like elisa who administers medicine and is around sick people all day? I\'d be scared shitless if I was her.

that said, I\'m going to keep enjoying life and take things as they come. if someone I work with is sick and they come in, I\'ll go home. if I\'m sick, I\'ll go on medication, and so on.

You married a cop.

And you like The Breakfast.

I find this odd. No need for explanation though, love is love and music is music.

I know, its waaaaay odd. I think it too. we\'re getting married in August.  And we had our guest book for the reception made up with a cover that says, Papa was a Copper and Mama was a hippie...(line from RHCP.) We\'re proof that opposites attract.   And he is not only a cop, but an undercover narcotics officer.   But he\'s actually cool.  If he busted you smoking pot, he\'d let you go.  Now if he busted you selling large amounts of heroin, well, then...yeah he\'d arrest you.   He likes The Breakfast and thinks Tim is a guitar god.

And you are right love is love, music is music. ;)

That was pretty classic, kudos....

Now back to that damn lethal swine flu.    Is everyone still okay?  Maybe we should have a periodic attendance check....

To get back on track...

It\'s hard (at least for me) to determine what is real from what is a purely media-driven frenzy anymore.  I don\'t trust mainstream media any more than any of you.  I always trace the root of most things back to the almighty dollar, and if mass media and big pharmeceuticals stand to make a huge windfall off of something (as they do with swine flu pandemonium) then I trust them to get behind that something 110% and make it as big as possible.  So I\'m really not that worried.  But it DOES seem odd that over 100 people in one city died of this one strain of flu in like 3-4 days.  I know people die of flu all the time but that does seem abnormal.

Anyhow, let\'s just say for the sake of argument that this IS the second coming of the plague and 10 million people in North America will die from this before July 4th.  Two questions:

1.  Would I believe the media when they told me this was going to happen?
2.  Would it make any difference?  Would I actually be able to save myself by taking the precautions they recommended?

I don\'t think this flu is a major threat since most people recover fine.  But a more lethal variant could easily spread this quickly.  I work for a hospital and can say right now we are not prepared for a pandemic.

>>2. Would it make any difference? Would I actually be able to save myself by taking the precautions they recommended?

Most likely it would help.  Precautions like wearing a particulate mask and good hygiene definitely reduce the chance of infection.
