amen, kindm\'s!!

its like parents who won\'t let their kids play at a house where the homeowner has a gun, for fear of an accidental shooting, but will happily send their kid off to a friend\'s house where there is a swimming pool. there are less than 10 gun/child related deaths per year, but over 400 drownings every year. but the "good, protective parent" in them still sends them to their far more likely death out of a misplaced and misinformed fear.

Now you\'re going to bring gun rights into this discussion...  And I\'m the one who makes controversial threads... Don\'t even get me started...

wow, seriously man, i offer reading comprehension lessons for reasonable prices. i\'m sure they\'re available in jersey, too.

i didn\'t bring up gun rights, i brought up sending children into two separate situations that are perceived as dangerous, and showed how the most prevalently avoided situation is the less dangerous in actuality. whether you love guns or hate them is entirely irrelevant to this fact.

I got the point of your post.  But you know what, if my kid wanted to go play at a friends house where the parents made it know that they have guns in the house, I might be inclined to invite them over by my house where there are no guns.  Your point was well taken - more chance of drowning that getting shot at a house where they own a gun.  I just felt that your analogy was a bit controversial...

then you didn\'t get the point. which is that you\'re silly not letting your kid go over to the gun-house. i am anti-gun, but i\'m not worried that a kid will shoot itself with one. i\'m more worried that a kid would end up drowing. in fact, i\'m about 100 times more worried about drowning, because it is about 100 times more likely to happen. you are the exact parent i was discussing. you think you\'re being protective (like with all this swina bifita stuff), but in fact are missing the more common actual threats and opening your child to potentially worse situations. by having the kid come to your house, you are only subverting a 4 in 75million chance of a gun death. why worry about something so unlikely? why not focus on actual dangers?

again, the gun aspect has nothing to do with what i was talking about. the misinformed parent putting their energies into the wrong fears was my point.

and if i wanted to be controversial, i\'d\'ve told you why car seats don\'t actually save lives...

I do get your point, but the gun thing is a sticking point with me.  My kid, would also not be going anywhere, escpecially swimming, without a parent or grandparent to supervise.  I am overly protective of my child and that is my right.  As my daughter gets older, I\'ll be protective about other things, but again, what I want to be protective about is my right as a parent...

so then you stick her in a cellar anytime it storms, right? because there\'s a 1 in 280,000 chance of her getting struck by lightning which is FAR more likely than 4 in 75million.

please, be as protective as you want. i would never claim to tell you how to raise your kid. i\'m just pointing out that you\'re wasting energy on negligible threats and are allowing far more likely threats to occur. i\'d think that if you want to be a great protector, you\'d look into actual threats and not waste the time and energy on reactionary foibles.

who wants to come over and play......

i like guns, i like to shoot, i like to kill things..... it\'s all about knowledge, respect and common sense. which truth be told i had none of when i was a kid and got in some trouble. but as a parent you should be teaching your kids the right and wrong way to conduct yourself and if you don\'t know what to say get off your ass and learn. just because your not looking at something doesn\'t mean it\'s not there.
never trouble trouble till trouble troubles you

Haha it\'s ok Derek it\'d be a stretch to call you a douchebag ;)

Good to know you got a gun though. You know, in case we ever get in a fight to the death, I might want to run away instead.

don\'t get me going on guns. Obviously, mark being a po-po we have lots of guns in our home.  Key to gun safety: LOCK THOSE BITCHES UP.    Leaving a gun in a desk drawer when you have a curious 8 year old, mmmmm not too bright.   That\'s why they sell gun safes.

You married a cop.

And you like The Breakfast.

I find this odd. No need for explanation though, love is love and music is music.

"You are probably a douchebag if you wear patchy clothes and say things like Brah, Deemsters, Headies And Almost certainly a Douchbag if you LOVE drugs"

See how that works.

Would you say the same to a person who lives out in the woods where there are bears and other potentially dangerous game around ? How about someone who lives out in the sticks where the closest police station was very far away. Or simply someone like Yoda who wants to make sure he can protect his family if god forbid he ever had to.

Your blanket statement says more about you then anything.

For the record. i do not own a gun. I know how to use them and have in the past (for target shooting) which by the way is pretty fun.
