Don\'t know if I would compare the song writing of Phish to that of The Beatles.  The songs are good, but they\'re not The Beatles...

Ya I would like to clarify that I was agreeing with the point that what separates phish from other progressive acts such as yes and king crimson is their ability to write the more simple popish song from time to time. But I guess when you think about it the beatles made pop music (from rubber soul on) that is certainly much more than pop music. Much in part to more difficult instrumentation than pop music would suggest as well as being weirder(or on drugs) than pop music would suggest. So although I am not trying to compare phish is anywhere near the beatles if one was trying to make a case for how some of phish\'s "popier" songs were beatlesque that is the argument I would make.
I scratch my mind I think about life and stuff sometimes but shits ruff!

Joy reminds me a lot of Bruce Springsteen.

Besides the fact that you dislike both of them, what can you offer that would find anything common between the two other than the fact that bruce is from south jersey and so are trey and page....
The best music is essentially there to provide you something to face the world with - Bruce Springsteen

I offered a totally predictable response from you. Beyond that, nothing really.

i think it\'s turning back on me / i\'m down on the upside

Alaska was a serious drop in energy listening to that show for me.

In fact I was thinking this may be their most boring song ever!

Not tryin\' to stir the pot, just sayin!

I liked Alaska when I saw Trey Band play it last fall, still haven\'t seen Phish play it.

Red Rocks 2009-07-31 is one of my top 5 Melts. The slow layered bend-downs, preceeded by an eerie ringing loop with soulfully played descending part-scales, and soon accompanied by matching vocals is unlike any other Phish jam.

I straight up can\'t make it through this Melt again. Honestly, it makes me want to poop painfully, squeeze out a real tear-jerker. I remember the first time I listened to it I thought it was brutal, and after a 2nd go I feel awkward about everything. Fuckin hate it.
The crickets and the rust-beetles scuttled among the nettles of the sagethicket. "Vamanos amigos," he whispered, and threw the busted leather flintscraw over the loose weave of the saddlecock. And they rode on in the friscalating dusklight.  --Eli Cash

Smoke better **** Gordo.

I get it tho, Phish is diverse and there\'s something for everyone. Except all the people who don\'t like Phish at all who are probably cops or retarded. I like the dark / creepy side of Phish jams and this Melt stood out in contrast to me to the relatively upbeat, clean, standard-issue major-key jams that had been dominating most of the tour.

the album joy:
well, i have some good and bad things to say. Sugar Shack is imo the best song on the album. I like phish for many things, two of them being syncopated polyrythmic sections and interesting guitar melodies. sugar shack is the only example of these qualities on Joy, and the vocal harmonies are badass. thanks mike.
i really think that (for the most part) the songs on this album suck ass. so does alaska.
stealing time is kinda cool, but "got a clif bar and a cold green tea"? seriously, Tom, you need to reevaluate your shit. in general the lyrics and song structures seem uninspired and way too try-hard serious. than theres TTE. interesting song structure, just kind of boring. actually one of the better songs imo. I\'ve been around would have potential if it had more than one verse, although i see some cool type 1 jams coming from it. twnty years later has a cool feel to it, but only at the end. Ocelot, catchy as hell but a little to Dear Prudence-ey (won\'t you come out to play? get real).

after all this, i am still listening because i know that eventually more of the songs will grow on me. i don\'t understand how people can hate on sugar shack tho. its the only song that sounds like phish, not the Trey band (which sucks).

wow, i feel like an asshole.
