Cops are def being dick. Chill kids next to us had some jello shots in a cooler and I had some and they were delicious, meanwhile lifting my spirits. Turns out they\'re from pretty close to my digs and I know the guy from playing in different jammy bands around here. Anyway, up come the cops.

Kids ended up cuffed, searched, car searched, found like a tiny bit of nugget and threatened to send them to jail "any second" for like 20 minutes before finally just stealing their jello shots and leaving them alone.

My other friend had a friend who didn\'t get a ticket and cops said you had to chill at your car during the show. So kid gets bored and busts out a doobie, no doubt, and cops apparently just roll by but take down the license plate #.

On the way out my buddy gets his car raided by 6 cops all at once, full search, cuffed.... he had no real drugs besides a few empty **** baggies but he did have a fair amount of cash, earned on the fair and square by the way. The cops spent half an hour chewing him out, insulting him, and trying to figure out some way to fuck this kid over and take his money.

I dunno, seemed like some shady powertrippin\' going on to me. Phish lot is sketch this year, and it\'s not because of the fans.

That is why they need to require a college education for cops out there.  Most western state cops have a college background and some experience in life that don\'t make them powertrip on inferiority.  Definitely more chill when it comes to small stuff than the meatwads in the northeast.

it has begun to change out in the northeast.  MOST police departments will not take you if you only have a HS diploma.  They want a degree....sometimes....even a masters.  it depends where in the northeast you are.

Sometimes i really despise all the bitching about cops.  If you are doing something illegal, don\'t get caught.  Be more slick about it.  If you get arrested for doing something illegal, guess what, you broke the law.  Sometimes you will have a dick arrest you, its the luck of the draw.  And sometimes you will have a really understanding guy if you are CALM AND RESPECTFUL that will cut you some slack.   Remember, they aren\'t on a power trip, they ARE the authority.  They can arrest you for mouthing off to them and giving them a hard time.   It\'s called resisting arrest, disorderly conduct, interfering with an officer, and a multiple of other names.

Do they come into your job giving you a hard time?  No.  Think about it that way.  They are just doing their jobs.   Sorry for all those bad experiences you all seem to have, witness, and read about it.  But its kind of funny to me that no one has figured out, if you avoid the police, they will avoid you.  They don\'t come looking for you unless you are having a giant flag that says look at me, i have drugs, i am using them, i have alcohol out in the open.   All i am saying is be smart.   And remember, those same dicks are the same people you will run crying to when you have to dial 911 because someone stole your car, someone robbed your house, or even worse.

With that said, the narc enjoyed his first phish show on saturday......

In other Phish commentary...I just listened to the Sand from Camden.  Let me just say it is very good.  WHile listening, it very much reminded me of some of the SPAC \'04 jams like Drowned and Piper.  I have a feeling as Phish gets deeper into the tour, we are going to see more and more jams like that one.  Can\'t wait!

Definitely.

Listened to Camden first set and was nearly in tears with Joy. Couple lyrical flubs in Fee and Lizards but I will take it.

From my experiences, most cops, are/were the trouble makers in HS and college.  I understand what SP is saying, but I do think that these cops are targeting shows that they know there will be illegal activities going on...  I can compare it to the Bruce show at the Meadowlands in NJ.  People were BBQing and openly drinking from bottles, cans or martini glasses and there was no trouble from the local and state police patroling the lot.  I didn\'t see any drugs going on, but then again, I wasn\'t looking for it...

I think that there\'s a lot of people doing stupid stuff in the lots and there are some bad cops looking to make an example, but I\'m sure that there were some good cops that let a little of shit go un-noticed...

Not to thread jack but it has more to do with the militarization of our police forces and an Us against them mentality.

Seems more like them against us. I would have offered the cops a jello shot if they weren\'t like about to arrest the kids next to us who had a few dozen of em. I know they got a job to do but what I\'ve seen on Phish tour so far has been over the top.

Not to mention --- best behaved Phish crowd I\'ve ever seen! So, lighten up coppers (or, light one up)..

I think that after all the press about all of the arrests at hampton, cops nation wide are on a trip to see how many phishheads they can bust and how much of a dick they can be.

I see no reason for this.

I have nothing against a society based of the rule of law. Too bad there aren\'t enough voting phish-fans in a given community to elect legislators that will change the laws so the cops can\'t be dicks anymore.

FYI: If you hate cops, its most likely because you hate the laws they enforce the obivous solution is to change the laws.

the reason is simple. $$$$

with all the economic troubles and towns cutting back on everything the easiest way to get $$ is fines. And guess who does the fining ? Yup your wonderful police dept\'s. So they see phish, panic, concert goers in general as easy pickings for traffic violations, drug arrests, etc
not too mention they HAVE to be there and are usually clocking overtime for it.

this is exactly why you will see an uptick in checkpoints, speed traps, etc. The police depts get a kick back on the $$ taken, fines given out etc. States are hurting for $$ and the police are glorified tax collectors

no one bitches when folks such as these get fined.

...actually...

my town hired a new cheif of police about 5 years ago. since then, everyone i know (and everyone they know, etc, etc) has been ticked for speeding down "main st" or not stopping at a useless right-turn-on-red light that controls the intersection of an abandoned factory. these are not petty fines, because the speed limit is 25 and the speed of traffic is 35-40, and a right turn on red violation is apparently the same as running a red light.

so, last year, the town voted to give the town manager the power to control the length of the cheif of police terms (it used to be 5 years) and for the town select board to have to "re-hire" the cheif of police whenever his term ends.

Last year, the town voted to change the length of terms to 1 years, and the cheif of police was promptly not re-hired last month.

...democracy in action.

As long as there is Phish there will be police presence in the lot.

That is a fact.

Live with it.

I went to three shows and while I was not happy about all the police presence I also didn\'t bitch about.

It has no effect on the outcome of the show.

Unless you don\'t get into the show ;)

I definitely saw my share of cops this week, but as long as you weren\'t doing something stupid, they seemed to leave you be.  Only run in my crew had with the cops all week was sitting in the lot after the great woods show.  We were towards the back of the lot so, we weren\'t even thinking about moving for 2 hours.  All we were doing was sitting, chilling, and drinking.  Cops in the golf carts decided to show up and give us shit about having open alcohol containers out.  Not really too big of a surprise....they made us poor it out and get in the cars to get on the road, that\'s about it.  Other than the fact that after we got in the cars and we still couldn\'t go anywhere in traffic for another 1/2 hour, it really wasn\'t a big deal.

Granted it sucked to be told to get out, but it is understandable as it starts to get closer to 2am.  They just wanted people out, and even though it seemed stupid to leave that second (considering the traffic), there really is no point resisting...it can only lead to more unwanted harrassment and uneeded attention.

With that said, the narc enjoyed his first phish show on saturday......

Universal laws of right/wrong and justice are the authority. Cops are mostly just bullies and feed upon each others\' bully mentality. Face it... the ONLY way these guys get away with treating good kids like human filth is because they have handcuffs and guns.

Oh no, I have alcohol in the open. Oh no, I am smoking small amounts of marijuana in a state where its decriminalized. The fact is I didn\'t see anyone get fucked for serious crimes but I saw a lot of people get fucked and severely hassled and humiliated due to the most minor "crimes" you can think of.

Kind of like the time I got arrested on the way to a Breakfast show with about 0.2 grams of ****... a fact that I consider myself proud of.

I should be able to mouth off to whoever the fuck I want in the face of injustice. Last time my car broke down in the middle of the road and a cop pulled up and I asked him to give me a hand pushing it to the side of the road, as he was yelling at me to "clear the road", he refused to even offer me a jump-start.

I\'m a bit older now, and a bit wiser too. But I will never forget the serious injustice I\'ve seen laid upon my family and friends totally unprovoked by police.

These days I simply "fuck the police" by driving absolutely sober and keeping only small amounts of decriminalized ***** in my home state... if anything. And recently enjoying the opportunity to protest a recent series of police-beatings in my home town (for some reason they felt it necessary to beat the homeless).

Skye I really could care less if you get bent over the bitching about totally unacceptable police behavior. I\'m pretty sure you\'re the one who sold out your values here, not the rest of us.

Last time I asked a cop for simple directions she even intentionally sent me the totally opposite way. You really think I should give them any more respect than they have given me and my good friends in the past?

Ha...yes.  I neglected to mention that ZUke was pounding the bottle of Captain 100 in the lot before and after the show.  ALso he was tossing the frisbee with blatant disregard for cars, people, and cops.  He would just get the B and wing it toward the other side of the lot.  HAHAHA

BTW I also blame Zuke. If it wasn\'t for the amount of sketch he brings to tour there would probably have to be no police at all :P

Two points

- Minor crimes are still illegal
- Just because Skye is marrying a cop doesn\'t mean she\'s "sold out" her values.  She\'s been the one that has constantly said if you\'re going to do something illegal, be discreet about it.

Crimes are still crimes whether you agree w/ the laws or not.  If the laws are that harsh, do something about it yourself and try and change the law.
