Metallica Death Magnetic (it doesn\'t suck)
« on: September 24, 2008, 09:17:09 pm »
I bought this album the day it came out and didn\'t even take it out of the packaging until this week.  I was just putting it off b/c I was in no mood to be disappointed, even though my expectations had been set pretty low.

St. Anger was insultingly bad.  They attempted to get "metal" again and it just sounded like some Korn b sides.

Death Magnetic is extremely reminiscent of ... And Justice in all the best ways.  Hetfield\'s back to growls and barks and has all but abandoned the melodic ballads to the point where it might disturb some Nothing Else Matters/Black album era fans.  Kirk\'s solos are long and fast and notey just like they should be, and they are just all over this album.  They\'ve taken back the old Metallica mantra of "Is this a good spot for a guitar solo? Fuck it. Put one in there anyway."  This is by far the strength of the album.  It\'s just Kirk and Het ripping it.  Lars is still Lars. There\'s probably Metallica cover bands featuring better drummers, but I guess he\'s sort of half in charge and he\'s not going anywhere.  Somewhere Jason Newsted is laughing b/c the bass is once again inaudible on most tracks.

If you were a fan pre- 1991 check it out.  It\'s not Master, but it\'s their best in 20 years.  That Rick Rubin may have a future in producing.

i think it\'s ok, it feels like they are trying to hard to be "heavy" again

wow, i thought it blew.... emo metallica. i mean, seriously, "love is a four letter word"???? "what doesn\'t kill you makes you more strong" (as an english tutor, this drives me batshit!). i mean, if you got rid of james\' whiney, woe is me, life has been so hard bullshit lyrics and voice, then maybe this would be better. lars is painfully missing. if you listen, most of the double timed heavy bottom is guitar and bass, with lars just playing the snare. *incredibly* freakin\' lame! i actually though you could hear the bass, and certain much moreso than on justice. the guitar was the only decent part of the album, but how could you say there were no more ballads? maybe not full songs, but their balladeering is still in effect, just wrapped into other, heavier parts. which makes the heavier parts less effective because just as you\'re getting into it, the puss it out hardcore. i mean, it has the \'metallica\' sound, but to say its reminiscent of anything earlier than, say, black album is just wrong.

I listened to it over the weekend and the only song I could do without is Unforgiven III.  Other than that, it rocks.

Is it wrong to love Escher\'s Parts 3 & 4, and at the same time think that the very idea of even writing "Unforgiven III" is kind of pathetic? Because I do.

I don\'t think it\'s wrong, when you think about part 1 and 2.  Part 1 was okay, not the Metallica I grew up with, but not bad.  Part 2 was just stretching it.  It\'s kind of like The Misfits Halloween and Halloween II.  The original rocked but the second one was basically recycling the same song and adding some lyrics in Latin.  That being said, in a little over a month, those two songs will be piping through my house as little kiddies come to my door for candy.
