i mean unfortunately, i feel his playing has been the same for years now, and last night didn\'t
really change my opinion. for years he has just been relying on these blues based buildups and predictible runs that any fan can call from a mile a way. i know it\'s his band, but he solo\'s on every single song...the same way. part of the fun of seeing a guy like trey play is never knowing what you\'re going to get. however, at literally every trey show i\'ve ever been too, i\'ve left feeling kind of let down.
some of the tunes were great..sand, last tube, but some of the tunes were written with a horn section and sound flat without them. as well, the newer tunes, \'valentine\' or even \'let me lie\' seem so uninspired to me. they encompass the same weak themes of getting over drug addiction or making hard decisions in one\'s life, but he now writes these tunes in such a bland way. simple chord progressions with uncompromisingly corny lyrics.
that being said, i mean it\'s trey. but that\'s about as far as it goes. it is always great seeing him play. i saw his brooklyn and all points west shows too and felt the same way. brian and robert and chalkdust acoustic were great and trey even pulled out some cool improv on chalkdust. i\'d absolutely recommend checking it out for anyone on the fence. just go in to it knowing this is not what phish will be like (or so we should hope).
one of the better moments from last night:
