Blood drive at Shubert Theatre todayby News Channel 8\'s Kent PiercePosted July 30, 20085:55 AMNew Haven (WTNH) -- There\'s a call out across the state this morning for people to take some time to donate blood. The state is in desperate need.It\'s the time of year when the blood supply gets stretched very thin. People go on vacation, schools are closed, it means the Red Cross only has a half a day\'s supply when it usually has a three day supply.Believe me, there are just as many crashes and traumas in the summertime, and people still need surgery, so the need for blood does not take a vacation. And no, they can\'t stock up the rest of the year because some parts of the blood, like platelets, only keep for a few days.If you\'re in New Haven today and can spare just one hour to help save lives, come down to the Shubert Theater at 247 College Street between 11:30 and 4:15.You have to be at least 17 years old and weigh at least 110 pounds. If saving lives is not enough reward for you, if you donate blood this week you could win a $25 gas card. Many people say they have not donated blood because the have not been asked, well, consider yourself asked.
IMO, it\'s well worth the time. Plus, after you give, a couple beers and you\'re WASTED!
