Let\'s be honest here - cops have a lot of power and a lot of responsibility - most of which, I would never want to have.  That being said, there are a lot of cops that take their jobs (themselves) to seriously.  But regardless, they have the power to make life difficult for you if you decide to mouth off to them.

In my experience being nice to cops just leads to being arrested anyway.

you have to either be extremely nice, or kill them

nothing in between works

Ummmm, yeah.....just once in awhile one......he just doesnt look like one....

I will be the first to say, cops can go on power trips.
But also, at the same time i must advise, just do what they say.  If they say stop, stop.  If they say talk, talk. Mouthing off is like an open invitation for them to fuck with you. Usually if you calmly cooperate with them, things will go alright....normally....

Sorry that happened to you, leith.   unfortunately, cops like those give the rest of the hardworking-risking their lives guys a bad rep.  Just remember its a small percentage.  There are plenty of guys who would risk their lives to save yours. But we never talk about those guys.

Sorry for being so protective of the man in blue. I am just really proud of the work the ones I know and love do.  Many times i don\'t agree with their method.... I know there are bad cops, i\'ve seen and heard stories, but i wish the ones that deserve the props got them... i wish many of you would keep an open mind, the same open mind you wish they had.

damn leith... i\'m sorry to hear about what happened to you.

i\'ve been doing criminal defense investigation in ny for the last month and it\'s been insane to see SO many cases with people in jail on ridiculous charges simply due to overzealous police who got pissed off.

cops are people just like everyone else in that they are just as capable of having big egos, being judgmental, and making stupid decisions.

unfortunately, from what i\'ve seen, mouthing off to cops definitely does not help! so please refrain from that if you can since i don\'t think you would do very well in jail ;) i\'m glad that you were lucky to not have had things go any further than they did the other night. sucks that we are expected to bow down when many of us have really done no wrong.

not that i\'ve become some bleeding heart for all people committing crimes/violent criminals after seeing what i\'ve seen (i got to speak with a man who shot and killed a 74-year-old grandmother for looking at him "the wrong way" in arraignments the other day), but there is often some fabrication and exaggeration on the police end.

there are definitely good cops out there, but obviously some room for corruption.

I agree with you up to the part about talking.

You do NOT have to talk to the police. Anything you say CAN and WILL be used against you in a court of law. They do not have to read you your miranda rights for it to be admissible. The 5th ammendment protects you from self incrimination and you should use it if you are ever in a situation where you are being questioned by the police. They are not your friends, they are trying to gather evidence for an arrest / prosecution. Do not ever forget this. Staying quiet, not answering questions is your right as an American. If arrested ask to speak with an attorney. Do not fall for that "tells us what we want to know and we will go easy on you" BS. The police have no authority to make deals etc. That is what the district attorneys do.

Always best to simply avoid them if you can. If you have to have an interaction with the police be polite, do not touch them and above all else remember you HAVE to only obey LAWFUL orders.

Mouthing off to cops is not against the law but as they tend to not like their authority questioned, regardless as to how stupid they might be, caveat emptor

There are some disgusting criminals out there.  Mark had to go to Nevada two weeks ago to extradite a fugitive who had RAPED his six year old DAUGHTER.  Sick sick sick world.

You are correct.  Many people don\'t realize this.  They think it has to be like on TV.

Well I grew up with a step father who was a cop and my mother actually worked for the O.C. Sheriff\'s Office as a reserve officer. My Mom never went out on Patrol and was a pencil pusher but my stepfather was as fucking crooked as they come and was out all the time. He and the cops he was involved with definitely helped form my fuck the police attitude.
Sure I have met a cool cop here and there but for the most part they are not to be trusted and not out to serve and protect. I find this to be true in most of the cities I have lived in and even in the backwoods of Arkansas where my Mom lives.
Even in interactions I have had with cops supposedly helping I have found them to be confrontational and condescending.
The thing is I am very vocal about mine and others rights and have had numerous run ins with Police over their tactics and have never ended up in jail for them because due to my size I am considered for many to be non threatening and because I do know my rights never cross a line they can easily draw up afterward.

Like last night I told the cop fuck you near him and not within earshot of the perimeter crowd. All he could do was take it as it was one on one and you can say anything you want to another person as long as you are not threatening them.
Cops have to be the ones to be the level head if doing their job correctly. Yeah I may have pushed them verbally a bit because I was pissed but if they were doing their job correctly they would not have gotten all bent and things would have gone smoother.
They also put hands on me and once I brought it to the crowd\'s attention it was funny how quickly they let go as I was obviously not a problem for them to be grabbing me as they were.

I think I do walk a very thin line sometimes but I really don\'t care and will continue to fuck with cops any chance I get when I see them abusing their power.

Please write if I end up in jail. TIA

Yeah I got ribbed hard hanging out with "Dad" while on tour.
As a matter of fact hanging outside of Toad\'s a dude came by on his bike and said " Hey great show man." I laughed and was like okay? He looked at me again and mumbled something else, laughed and rode off. I can\'t remember who was with me but we looked at each other like WTF?. It wasn\'t until a couple hours later while recounting the story to someone did it occur to me what had happened.

Yeah, rather than outwardly expressing my feelings towards authority figures, i find it much more fun and engaging to more or less manipulate the situation so that they end up believing they\'re on my side.

Just a couple weeks ago, i got pulled over for going 98 in a 55.  The cop was a gigantic, power trippy schmuck who flexed every muscle in his body as he walked over to my car, where he spoke to me in a sinister, monotone voice.  Seriously, it was just short of him positioning my rearview mirror so that he could admire himself.  In any event, by the end of the encounter, I left with a cell phone ticket, (oh goodness, officer, I\'m so sorry, I\'ll go buy a hands free device RIGHT NOW!), and he left with his ego intact.  win/win.
Postcount +1.

i\'m gonna play devils advocate just for a second. by no means am i taking any sides.....it\'s just that some times i think people forget that cops are CONSTANTLY getting every scam known to man along with a couple of new ones a day, thrown at them. i believe in many cases that their callous and/or aggressive attitudes are a necessary self protective thing that the rest of us cain\'t begin to understand the need for. in my job, many places that i go, i\'m "the man" all of a sudden (go figure) and i have to detach myself in order to function properly. it\'s not an easy job is all i\'m saying. so maybe if your light rig screws up one night, none of us will call you an asshole for it, we\'ll just chalk it up to a bad day. maybe stopping back later and making peace would have been the play.   ;)

I kind of think of it like this:

We are somewhat like "customers" to cops, always bitching, moaning, and complaining and never really thanking them for the work they do.

Plus, there are some people who are generally sick fucks and out to mess up society. Cops, not being mind readers, logically assume (for their own safety) that everyone is a sick fuck, or at the very least a pissy customer.

Unlike  us and having to take it when some guy being a bitch about his apples not being organic, they can actually forcefully stop him from being a bitch and get back to their real job of protecting us from the sick fucks.

So I try to be as polite and helpful as possible, while bearing in mind the fact that I don\'t have to communicate with cop any more than required.

This strategy has worked 4 out of 5 times I\'ve had encounters with the fuzz.
