OK, so I promised a review - albeit it brief.
Crowd = a few hundred at best
Venue = shit sound as regards vocals and also there were overwhelming bass freqs, which screwed up my recording (or more likely, I need a battery box and decent mics!;))
(I will probably just release my recordings as mp3s as a result of thsi distortion, just for folks to hear what got played, which will suffice till the other taper gets his up recordings.)
Acts:
The Bays:
Boring techno shit that went nowhere. I know the Breakfast and biscuits go for the techno jams at times, but you always feel like it\'s going somewhere and are waiting for the main song section to come back and wondering how they are going to find it again.
UM:
Setlist: Push The Pig > Jazz Odyssey > Miss Tinkle\'s Overture, The Bottom Half > Jazz Odyssey > The Bottom Half, EAT > Intentions clear > Eat, Wappy Sprayberry > Higgins, Plunger
Really enjoyed them on the whole - some good tunes and some nice unison guitar work. Vocals were OK too, when you could hear them, though as I have said elsewhere on this board, Tim could outplay both guitarists at the same time. It wasn\'t bad playing - some of the Allmans/Skynyrd/Wishbone Ash-type bits were quite impressive and tight as hell, but solos were just not very fluid. Drummer good too - showed he could play in a variety of styles. Bought the last two studio albums at the gig as a result, which were good companions on the four hour drive home.
Biscuits:
Setlist: Astronomy Domine, Caterpillar > Orch Theme > Caterpillar, Strobelights and Martinis* > Cyclone > Strobelights and Martinis, Air Song, Have a Cigar (W/ Jake of UM) *Extended Jam in F#
Barber had lots of monitor problems at first, which can\'t have made it easy, especially when he had to play the gig seated due to a broken (?) leg/ankle. Nice PF covers to top and tail the sets, though I\'m sure there was a RLH tease too early on. Elsewhere people have raved about the set, but though I enjoyed it, I wish they could have played a few more of the rockier tunes - guess I was hoping too much for a Story or Jigsaw, which no doubt will be busted out in Amsterdam. I think they felt they should be more techno in the UK as there isn\'t really a jamband scene here. However, that didn\'t stop Gov\'t Mule last year, nor sci the two times I saw them when they were here. Nice to hear Caterpillar and Air Song though.
Overall, well worth the $50 for a ticket and 7.5 hours driving - now, wonder if someone can get The Breakfast on the jitd ticket next year!!
