I enjoyed listening to the first set more than the second. Although the rust was very good... the  Mooboos jamwas kinda of unique and quirky sounding but fell a little flat in terms of really going places I thought.

and may i be the first to say : WELCOME BACK JOSH f\'n DOBSON! ooooh how we have missed you. it was awesome to see the sound dude groovin at the stage instead of anxiously/obnoxiously blocking my way and screwing up the sound. your presence truly made the evening complete.

so it is safe to say dobs is back on board 100% from here on out?

WONDERFUL AMAZING NEWS!

Have fun at your 100th princess!

man...dobsy is the tit!!  he knows how to work the board and interact with the band in a professional manner, plus he can get down to the music.  overall, he\'s the best.  after the show i just had to give him some kudos for his expertise...and also found out that yes, dobs is in and chad is out!  :) woot! woot! :)
if you need me i\'ll be in the Angry Dome!

That\'s crazy that they post the entire set. Good stuff.

Awesome jam to open up the 1st set. Yet absolutely clear that Matt is not all that impressive rhythmically. Sorry but I\'m not going to just give in on this subject. He knows his shit but he\'s jerky as hell, especially in his leads. And no, I don\'t think it\'s a style thing. Still very happy he\'s in the band, but he\'s also lucky to be in this band.
The crickets and the rust-beetles scuttled among the nettles of the sagethicket. "Vamanos amigos," he whispered, and threw the busted leather flintscraw over the loose weave of the saddlecock. And they rode on in the friscalating dusklight.  --Eli Cash

Reality check time!

Your theory that matt has "average talent" and poor rythym is dog shit.

Just forget about it and move on.

Do you seriously think matt is lost rhythmically in the opening jam from this show?

If yes then state a specific minute mark when you consider him to be off rhythmically and I will tell you why your wrong.

I\'ll tell you why your wrong anyway.

He is a brilliant JAZZ musician.

This opening jam is a perfect example I am glad you brought it up.

During the initial build up and peak matt is on point and raging right along the whole time. Then around the 8 minute mark when the jam gets all quirky and even a little jerky (oh no!) then busts into a super styled out groove in a way like you have never heard the band play before ....He\'s not lost or off beat!

It\'s not a happy accident.

It\'s stylistic.

His playing outside the box like that is what makes that jam go the places it goes.

It\'s what MAKES that jam \'awesome\' as you yourself even admit it is.

It\'s what taken this band to the next level.

snap out of it kid0

Did I not say in my post, "And no, I don\'t think it\'s a style thing." I still absolutely disagree with you. I finished listening to the whole first set about an hour ago and there are a ton of "ouch" moments in his rhythm. It\'s not style, it\'s that he can\'t keep up. I\'m not throwing the towel in by any means, I do realize that he is new to an incredibly gifted band and things will improve. But at the moment, yes, I think his rhythms are off quite often.

What makes the jam awesome is simply having that extra layer and freeing up Tim\'s hands to focus on guitar. They were a trio for what, a year and a half, and they themselves grew without the 4th element. It just took a fourth element to be able to display that growth and what they learned they wanted to do once their hands weren\'t tied trying to fill that empty space.

I\'ll listen again to point out specific spots...

Also, I\'m not saying that Matt is a chump on keys. I think he is good and would sound great amongst average musicians. However this is not the case.

there is still times when he loses a groove and it takes him a while to find his way back.

yes.

but that doesn\'t mean he is an average musician with poor rhythm who cant hang.

sheesh.

lighten up man.

Alright, I just listened to the first 6 minutes again and it\'s not even worth posting specific time frames. To me, I just think, even for a jazzy musician, he\'s a touch late on at least half of the turnarounds. It sounds like his fingers freeze for a moment and then blurt a bit tardy. And he just doesn\'t really groove, imo, when the jam is begging for a fluid run amongst his quirkiness. Dude, I don\'t think I need to wake up. Nor do I think you do. I think his presence has brought the band to the next level (and I\'m not saying any player could have) but there are many out there that could have. Sorry, just don\'t find him to be that great.

I never said he was an average musician by the way. I said he was born with average natural talent and has absolutely made the most of it, meaning he has become an above-average musician through lots and lots of practice. Which is why I\'m not trying to bash him, I actually have a lot of respect for him because of this.

Anyways, I feel pretty light on the subject. Just wanted to express my opinion. And I know that\'s all it is.

Damn I love having Dobs back on sound. Vocals especially.

Matt is on keys brilliant.  I\'m not just saying that as a fan of this band.  I think his "offbeats" as you call them, are really beyond our realm and scope.  Kinda like Adrian\'s beats for a newb.  They can\'t keep up with his tunes.  it\'s ok, just try your best, guy. someday, we\'ll all "get" your rhythm. ;)

I think you can stick to your opinion of brilliance, and I\'ll stick to my opinion of "offbeats". I was a newb to this band once, and Adrian\'s beats were never \'beyond my realm and scope\', just like Matt\'s abilities are not \'beyond my realm and scope\'. I think Adrian in the grand scheme of drummers is absolutely top-notch where Matt,  in the universe of keyboardists, is not. That\'s the difference for me. Like I said before, just wanted to express my opinion and I know that\'s all it is. I just listened to the rest of this show and I still feel the same way. The HLH jam is awesome, TO ME, unless I focus on what Matt is doing. He sounds sloppy, way out of rhythm with the flow of the jam, and actually downright annoying with his clav banging......... TO ME.  I\'m not at all saying you guys should think my opinion is the truth, just as I wouldn\'t want that shit flipped on me. I know that there isn\'t and shouldn\'t be a finite truth when talking about music, especially improv. That\'s key to the beauty of it all. There\'s no   x + y = z.

Let me put it this way (in the light that this \'other\' band is mediocre before having a TB member join): If Tim joined another band, I\'d listen to them without a doubt. If Adrian joined another band, I\'d be all ears. If Ron joined another band, I\'d give it a shot and probably wouldn\'t sustain interest. If Matt joined another band, I\'d completely forget about his future as a musician. Once again, glad he\'s on board, he adds that sorely needed 4th element, but as an individual musician my opinion is very indifferent-- meh, if you will. I\'m far from convinced that he\'s "the perfect fit" for The Breakfast, he\'s just simply good enough for me. Sorry if this seems arrogant, not at all my intention, just my feelings.

I: jam > Puppetry, Great Big Fiery Ball In The Sky* > Hard Luck Harry > Night Of The Thumpasorus Peoples

II: Space City Affair > Rust > LDZ > jam > Wake Up In A Coma > Mooboo\'s Voodoo (Episode 2) > Wake Up In A Coma > Mooboo\'s Voodoo (Episode 2) > jam > Merge > When The Levee Breaks** > Hard Luck Harry^

E: May Fly Disarray^^

* with extended guitar intro.
** Led Zeppelin cover; first time played.
^ with \'When The Levee Breaks\' (Led Zeppelin) teases.
^^ with \'Riders On The Storm\' (The Doors) jam.

I just listened to this again and I think there is a "First Tube*" tease in the jam between LDZ and Wake Up In A Coma. It is roughly between 0:35 and 1:15 in the song.

*I don\'t my tubes well enough to tell if it\'s first, last, inner or just plain tube. Can someone else listen to this?
