I have listened to a few of the songs, and here is my humble opinion:
I liked Larks\' Tongues, I definitely think that song would rock and the Breakfast could easily kick the shit out of that song. It would be cool to see that in the middle of a sandwich instead of a jam, considering it is an instrumental. The spacey strings throughout the song would probably be the most difficult thing to produce, Matt would most likely have to whip out some crazy synths or something.
The Tony Williams stuff I thought was cool, but I found Snake Oil to be a little boring and repetitive. If they really wanted to play instrumental covers they would have the find the perfect places for them to fit in the setlist, and too many would get old without hearing any vocals.
Caravan sounds pretty epic. That would be a crazy cover for them to do, but I am just wondering how that would fit into a setlist. It is the type of song that stands on its own, and I can\'t picture them playing a song like Gladys Pimp and then Caravan and then Scheme or something. It would be weird. Maybe as an encore, but then again i don\'t know.
I think the obscure covers are great, and I think some of these songs are good ideas, but why can\'t they do obscure covers of bands that audience members actually know? Like a rare Hendrix song or Zeppelin... they have so many great songs that you don\'t hear on the radio every friggin day. And not just classic rock stuff, but more modern rock... like soundgarden or audioslave or radiohead.... I think it would kill if the played paranoid android.
Their covers now suck, we all know that. I hate Jump. And it seems like they only have a few covers that they play over in over. Honestly, I\'m surprised they are not sick of playing them. When I was in a band, I got fed up playing the same cover over and over, I always wanted to try something new. They are good enough to break out a new cover at every show, and they really should start doing that, at least until they find ones that are good and they like to play. Obscure ones are definitely ideal and probably will be the keepers, but sometimes you gotta reel the audience in with something that they will know. Mix it, keep them guessing, and keep trying new ones.
