Obscure Covers TB Can Make Their Own
« on: October 12, 2007, 12:47:40 pm »
One of the appealing qualities of The Breakfast were their choices for obscure cover songs. Whether it was Zappa, Funkadelic, Mahavishnu Orchestra, Gong, or Focus, the boys were tapped into an untapped resource of musical wealth. Most bands, especially in the jamband scene, strive on playing redundant covers. During the past several years The Breakfast have been guilty of this. But with the addition of Matt and this new found energy, the Breakfast have reached another golden road of opportunity.  In this thread I\'ll be posting obscure covers that The Breakfast can/should make their own. These songs all match up to the energy the band has been putting out recently and I feel many of you will agree with me that the band would absolutely KILL playing them.

So please, discuss....

"Red Alert" by Tony Williams Lifetime
http://www.mediafire.com/?9i2mzzdowcq

NOTE: I\'m posting a bunch of Tony Williams Lifetime songs because they fit PERFECTLY with the Breakfast framework. I think after giving a listen many of you will say, "Wait, are you sure this isn\'t the Breakfast?"

BTW Mods: Please don\'t merge this with the covers thread. This is meant to spark discussion and possible campaigning.

"Sweet Revenge" by Tony Williams Lifetime
http://www.mediafire.com/?bzmfdzmyfjm

NOTE: This is a SAVE bassline If I\'ve ever heard one!!!!

"For Richard" By Caravan
http://www.mediafire.com/?6jbyng7dwml

This would absolutely destroy each room it would be played in.

So anyone listen to any of the songs? What did you guys think?

Tony Williams stuff woudl be interesting, but do we want the band to get a rep as being a jazz fusion band?

Strangely enough, I was thinking about them doing Caravan the other day - have loved that band for over twenty years. I was thinking Golf Girl would be a fun cover. However, For Richard would be epic.

Boombox, I was referring to a cover or two of Tony Williams.  I just offered several that were appropiate to choose from.  I personally think if the band focused their shift to the progressive/fusion audiences they would make bigger waves.  Umphrey\'s has been slowly building from that level up, when it\'s apparrent this is what Tb should be doing. They have the tools for transformation, they just need to use them now!

And thank you for replying to the threads original intention!!! :)

I agree the band has the ability to go down the biscuits route and would no doubt reach different audiences, but I would beware of going too far that way. After all, that is what appears to have caused sci to split and in the same way as bluegrass got sidelined for Nershi, I don\'t think Tim would want to lose the chance to really rock out.

Just my two Euros worth, but you wanted discussion! :)

BTW Check out the new Caravan at the BBC album: The Show Of Our Lives - some excellent versions of their classic material, including For Richard.

I don\'t see Tb going down the livetronica road. Even if they are playing more trance jams, the band doesn\'t have enough of an arsenal to create an authentic electronic synthesis. The beauty of a band like Tb, is they can do whatever they want, and with finesse (for the most part).  They CAN insert a huge jam inside any of said posted songs. I mean how badass would it be to hear a Larks Tounges with a jam in the middle?  In many ways this is my fantasy thread, but not without haste.  The band would KILL each of the songs posted in this thread.  It would be unique because NO ONE covers them, and because they can put their own spin on them.

Like I said, go to "Sweet Revenge" and TELL me that the main bassline (which kicks in after a minute or so) isn\'t a Save Spears bassline.

BTW I can\'t think  of any other music that rocks harder than fusion or prog.....:)  Thanks for the discussion!
