they had the whole family on good day at like 7 this morning. they interviewed the oldest one aout the "buddy system" where an older kids is responsible for a younger one, right down to the homeschooling. good that theyre not leeching off society so much as, for example, that couple that had septuplets who are all special education at over $80K/yr/kid, but the older kids wont have any childhood of their own! matt\'s mother is the oldest of 8 and she still resents her mother for making her take care of so many kids!
one thing i dont get about all these jesus freaks who feel its their duty to overpopulate the planet, is why dont they at least give natures best birth control a shot- breastfeed! statistically when a woman breastfeeds exclusively for 6-12 mo and continues up to 2yrs, her chances of delivering another baby in those 2yrs is less than 2%. so this lady could have ended up with only 1/2 as many kids that way! or maybe shes just some sort of fertility goddess, since i cant see how anyone could afford to bottlefeed 16 babies.

as much as this is a part of her religious beliefs, i can\'t help but find it eerie, selfish and irresponsible fora parent to do this. i am #2 in a family of 4 daughters and that\'s enough. not that having 3 sisters took away from my childhood at all, but there is always competition between siblings for attention/love from parents. the fact that these kids have the responsibilities of basically being babysitters to their younger brothers and sisters at such a young age along with them being home schooled (that just adds to the strangeness of this family), they must end up having such a deprived upbringing.

Yeah and cripes look at the dresses those poor girls were wearing. I think I may have worn a dress like that when I was like 6 and was going to see the nutrcracker... but some of those girls look pretty old and when they show up for college wearig one of those dresses...

On a side note, my little brother was homeschooled for the last 2 years of high school and I really wish I had done the same.

the thing is, i think they know that and do it on purpose, as in, is it so bad that we\'re depriving our kids of "exposure" to the rest of society, that they may never learn about sex, drugs, and rock and roll... will they actually be less happy for what they dont know or will what they dont know not hurt them? i know a lot of people that homeschool, it seems to be some sort of underground movement lately, and their reasons are pretty much that and also "custom tailored" education. yah its a little creepy in 2005. im not sure its necessarily bad. i for one could never tolerate having my 4th grader home all day, as i cant wait for that bus to come in the morning, but those mothers are different. they make this their whole life. they want nothing more than to be with their kids all the time forever.

I think homeschooling can be great as long as the kids have plenty of exposure to social situations with other kids.

A lot of homeschoolers have no problems with this because they seem to all be in some sort of homeschooling "network."

No factory education? I\'m all for that idea. It just has to be done right. And I think it just so happens that a lot of the people who decide to homeschool their kids tend to be religious fanatics or overly protective parents, or both. It\'s really too bad.

i wasn\'t trying to crack on home schooling as a whole, i have friends that have been homeschooled and they are the same as any other kid--but it seems like everything this family does is family oriented. how do you have a playdate with someone who has another 15 siblings around when you guys are trying to have fun? or what about a sleep over? what happens if the buddy system is broken because one kid wants to go to a movie with a friend? is that even possible in the household??
