XP - Service Packs 1 & 2: Installation Problems
« on: June 20, 2005, 07:36:14 am »
You may remember just before Xmas I was having pc problems. Well, I sort of got them fixed and battled on for months until I was given a disc of XP Professional. Having installed this, I\'ve managed to get it all running normally, having had to download updated drivers etc. Frankly I won\'t know myself as I can now at last watch the various VCDs I downloaded from EZT - could only watch them without sound before, get captures from DVDs from which I\'ve ripped the audio etc etc.

Anyway, having finally been able to do a Windows update (my problems meant IE wouldn\'t work - long may Firefox reign!!), I\'ve installed all the smaller updates, but there remains the big question: "Should I download and install Service Pack 2?"

I know there may be potential problems with various incompatibilities. Do they outweigh the benefits? I await your suggestions.

After SP2 i have been having some firewire issues. my computer will sometimes restart on its own when i connect a firewire device while using my protools hardware as a sound card. its very annoying because i always forget to turn off my digi002 when i plug in a firefire device. then the computer restarts while i have unsaved documents open and stuff like that. my other computers running SP2 have been just fine though.

a note about part 2 (the random restarting) - check your \'Automatic Updates\' settings. unless you change the default, when a new Critical Update is released, it will download it and install it for you, and also restart your computer (i believe it waits until overnight to do the actual reboot)..

and no, it doesn\'t care what you have open, it\'ll just reboot..

thanks, but thats not the problem. auto updates are off for me. i am running a version of windows xp configured for running protools. besides tweaks for better performance the default setting for updates is off.

The computer restarts as soon as the firewire device is recongnized. it also does it after i burn a cd in nero. after i click \'done\' or whatever it is the computer restarts instead of the cd ejecting. none of this happens if i power off the digi002 first, but i usually forget. i only get this problem with burning cds if the computer has been on for a while. if its the first thing i do when i turn on the computer i can burn cds with the digi002 on. this problem comes back after reformatting and installing the SP2 upgrade, so i know its SP2 related.

Thanks for the advice re downloading and installing SP2.

However, once downloaded, it won\'t install. I get an error message saying the registration code for XP is invalid. (No doubt, as it was of, shall we say dubious origin!!! tsk! tsk!!)

Can\'t even get SP1 to install - which I need for USB 2.0 compatibility. Anyone got any ideas how I can get round Bill Gates\' security?!!

try this and you should be all set. you wont have to enter a ser #. it does it for you in the background during installation. theres just no guarantee how long it will be valid for. but thats what you have to deal with if you dont want to pay.

Known Bugs:

1. If you use a Hyper Threaded pc you may have problem with this, switch off HT in your bios temporarily while installing
and after install copy the included ntoskrnlmp.exe to your /Windows/system32 folder (u may have to do this in safe mode)
and then reboot. The reason for this is the custom boot screen we made only supports single processor pc\'s and XP recognises
HT as dual processor pc\'s.

2. We tested as many combinations of apps as possible, all apps that could not be cracked without user interaction have had
the crack copied to the desktop after you install said app so you can do it yourself, if for some reason the crack isn\'t there
you can find it in the C:\\install\\Applications\\nameofappfolder.

It will take a bit longer than your used to to install Nemesis as it is a very large disc and has to copy the contents over,
patience is a virtue tongue.gif.

Defragment your drive after you have finished installing everything.

Last note - read a lot of threads about previous versions crashing etc, guys check your damn hardware first before throwing
stones at this package, those blue screens actually mean something you know.

Enjoy.
