ok...i\'m ready to throw some money down on one of these finally. now that the price is down to $149...how could i resist?
anyway...i know somebody who sells upgrades for the xbox. he wants to sell me a 120gig hard drive for $80 and a chip(what kind, i\'m not sure) for another $50. these upgrades will allow me to run some kinda MAME on the box. not sure what i\'m gonna do though cause i don\'t have the extra $$ to blow right now. i don\'t know if these upgrades will enhance my all around xbox experience or if it is solely just for the MAME. i think i read somewhere that upgrading to a faster processor would louse up xbox live(which i plan to get after i get dsl).

and another thing: is all of this worth it if the NEXT BOX is coming out within a year or two? i hear that games won\'t be compatible.

steve -

i\'ve had an xbox since release day, and have had it chipped since shortly after that.. i never added a 2nd hard drive, or upgraded the original (though i think it\'s a GREAT idea - faster load times, not having to load discs, etc) - i\'ve just never dabbled in it..

not sure what you mean by faster processor. AFAIK, you can\'t upgrade the xbox\'s processor.

while you\'ll be able to run MAME with a modded xbox, to take full advantage of MAME, you need a fast computer. you\'ll be able to play a LOT of games on X-MAME, but it\'ll lag on some of the newer games.

supposedly with the newer chips, you can turn them \'off\' if you want to go on XBL... can\'t do that with my chip (1st gen chip), but i don\'t use XBL and don\'t ever plan to..

but with a chip and a bigger HD, you\'ll be able to do more than just MAME - you can copy games to and play them off your hard drive, as i mentioned, and pretty much every system is emulated on the xbox.. oh, and you can play copied games too, not that i\'m condoning that. ;)

^^ everything you need to know about xbox mods.

let me know if you have any more questions, and i\'ll see if i can answer them..

thanks alot, dave! i guess it is worth it to do these upgrades...
the chip is for running the emulators and copied games...not a faster processor then. ok, cause i saw in a magazine that some people were switching to faster ones.

:hscratch: wow...that site has me lost!! a monsterous wealth of information i have no concept of...

there\'s so many different chips out there...not to mention the counterfeit ones.

i just emailed the guy who\'s gonna do the upgrade. he said that the chip can be turned off, but there\'s also some FREE programs that act like xbox live. Boxlink is the one he uses, but it sounds like it runs thru the pc and you have to link up the xbox and the computer.

interesting.. i\'ve been out of the scene for a while, so i haven\'t really kept up with the new stuff... the pc \'bridge\' thing though is probably similar to what i used to do with halo.. before XBL, i used to play halo online by going through gamespy... was quite cool actually..

i\'ll have to drop by xbox-scene to see what\'s new.. steve, once you get it going, let me know if you need anything.. i have quite a bit..

i just rented it the other day....can\'t stop playin it. it\'s been a while since i played a rpg, but i find this game worthy of immersing myself in it for hours at a clip....but that\'s probably cause it\'s a starwars game. def check it out though once you get yourself situated. it\'s gotta be even more incredible on a hdtv.
