Did I get too obscure?
« on: September 24, 2009, 02:03:10 pm »
One of my favorite responsibilities at work is writing game notes. It basically my only opportunity to present the facts in some sort of interesting way. One of the simple joys is coming up with clever headlines to each note. This simultaenously "lubes my wheels" with pride, and scares me that I went way too obscure with this title:

Quote
Like the FBI and the CIA and the BBC…
Junior Kelly Ozurovich eclipsed the 900-dig mark for her career during her All-Tournament caliber performance at this past weekend’s Seton Hall Invitational. Ozurovich, who was also honored by the Ancient Eight as a member of the Ivy League Weekly Honor Roll, was the anchor of a Yale defense that held opponents to a .083 hitting percentage this past weekend. The two-time All-Ivy honoree at libero averaged a stellar 7.00 digs per set and landing four service aces for the Bulldogs in the trio of straight-set victories. Ozurovich currently rates second in the Ivy League and 13th in all of Division I with 5.38 digs per set.

Does anybody get the joke, or will everybody just be scratching their heads? Either way, I\'m printing it, damn it.

Me either.

But, then again, we are not Yalies.

Really, who is your target audience Drew? Do people even read this or is it just a release?

Upon Google, I came across it being lyrics to The Beatles Dig It. I still don\'t get it.

If you exclude the players and coaches involved in this weekend\'s tournament, I would say that 15 people tops will read the whole thing. My goal is that at least five people get the reference and that one of them bothers to contact me about it. That would make my week complete.

I see your vision and approve.

Best of luck!

so you had a perfect chance to reference a breakfast song as a headline and you didn\'t do it? you should be banned from .info

also, a reference to the breakfast\'s dig would have been truly obscure.

In my career, I have used "A New Beginning", "The Chase", Food For Thought", "Fresh Cut" and "Infrequently Asked Questions"...still patiently awaiting for my chance to use "Cut Me Some Slack" or, the coup de grâce (because it would take a miracle for this number to ever be relevant) "FORTY-SIX AND A QUARTER!"

Also, any reference to a lyric from the Breakfast\'s "Dig" in regards to an athlete would probably get me fired. That\'s also why I went with "Dig It" instead of "Dig a Pony"; "You can penetrate any place you go" as a game note title has lawsuit written all over it.
