Mar 17, 2009 -- Opting out of the new Verizon Wireless privacy policy
Are you a customer of Verizon Wireless, the nation\'s largest cellular company? If so, heed this special warning…

Verizon Wireless\' new privacy policy actually allows them to sell info about your location; who you talk to; how long you talk to them; what websites you log onto when using a smart phone and on and on.

But you don\'t have to take it. You can opt out (see next quote)

Clark recently went crazy when there was a move to tax motorists based on when they drove; where they drove; and how far. He was upset over the potential invasion of privacy that would result from government snooping around on you to collect taxes.

And you know what? A private industry like Verizon Wireless doing it doesn\'t make it any better!

Quote
A small legalistic pamphlet from Verizon arrived today telling me that I have 45 days to opt out of “agreeing” to let Verizon share Customer Proprietary Network Information, i.e., “information created by virtue of your relationship with Verizon Wireless,” including “services purchased (including specific calls you make and receive,” billing info, technical info and location info. They promise to only share this with “affiliates, agents and parent companies.” It will definitely not be shared with “unrelated third parties” … unless, perhaps that third party pays Verizon to become an affiliate, whatever the heck “affiliate ” means.

To opt out you can call 1-800-333-9956. Or you can follow the instructions in the mailing to go to verizonwireless.com and log into My Verizon where you will find no mention, no button, no link and no help. Ah, but you forgot to check your Messages. There you will indeed find a link to CPNI. The link is marked “Not available.” Dead end.

You could then call Verizon’s excellent telephone support. (Nope, I’m not being sarcastic.) They won’t be able to find the opt out button either. But during the 8 minutes the rep puts you on hold, you’ll be amused to hear one of their continuous bits of self-promotion tell you that Verizon never shares your personal information. Oh, what a wry sense of humor Verizon has!

When you escalate the call, you will finally be told to click on the My Profile tab in My Verizon, then click on Phone Controls, and there you will conveniently find the link. It’s just that simple!

The whole thing sucks :(

I\'ve heard rumors too, but I don\'t think it\'s happening this year.  Which sucks cause I\'m due for a new phone and don\'t know what to get!

i think that verizon also pays companies to randomly text gibberish to people who dont have a texting plan in order to rack up the rates for customers...itmakes perfect buiness sense, but sucks for me.

that\'s funny, because I have a 500 message plan and I don\'t think I\'ve gotten even 2 spam messages, ever. maybe one. can\'t remember.

I have unlimited text and I get a flurry of about 10 messages in a two-day span once a quarter until I complaign to Verizon.  Basically they tell me that they\'re having a problem and to delete them without reading them.

only thing you can probably do is block all text messages...this is the new wave of marketing
