GOTV: Moving from ILCC
« on: August 25, 2006, 07:07:39 pm »
Looks like Terrapin finally decided to change venues

Dear VibeTribe,

Thank you for another amazing and unforgettable Gathering of the Vibes experience. We\'re so incredibly blessed to be part of such a kind, caring community of like-minded brothers and sisters who gather to build, renew, and strengthen bonds of friendship each summer. It warms the depths of my soul to see your smiling faces each year.

I thank all of the Terrapin Staff and Volunteers who worked so hard to help make this year\'s GOTV a success. The Vibes would never be possible without your limitless dedication. Honestly, I can\'t seem to find the right words to truly express just how much I appreciate your commitment to the Vibes. To see the pride and professionalism you show the VibeTribe year after year is beyond inspiring.

Five years ago we brought Gathering of the Vibes to the Indian Lookout Country Club because we needed help in cleaning up our scene. ILCC accepted the challenge and has helped make Gathering of the Vibes the safest festival of its kind, and for that I am eternally grateful. To see so many families bring their kids to the Vibes with the feeling of comfort and safety fills my heart with joy.

Over the last five years, we\'ve continuously worked with our hosts to try to improve the Vibes festival-going experience for our staff and attendees, but despite our best efforts, we\'re still not where we need to be. After much thought and deliberation, the Terrapin Board of Directors has decided not to return to ILCC in 2007.

Over the years, we\'ve formed some amazing friendships between the VibeTribe and ILCC. Even though we\'re leaving ILCC, I know these friendships will continue to blossom. Frank D, I value your friendship more than words can tell. I\'m incredibly appreciative to the Potter family, everyone at ILCC, and all in the community who have supported us over the years, but in my humble opinion, it\'s time to move along.

VibeTribe, your thoughts and ideas are important to us. I haven\'t had the emotional energy to go to our message boards yet, but from what I\'m hearing from Leda & Bob, it seems like you guys had a pretty good time in spite of some logistical challenges.

I love you guys and thank you from the bottom of my heart for your understanding and continued willingness to grow with us. As plans evolve for the 12th Annual Gathering of the Vibes, be well, go see live music, be inspired and let\'s stay in touch.

Ken

PS - I got to spend a couple minutes with Billy & Mickey and told them the story of Deadhead Heaven, and that the seed from which the Vibes emerged was rooted in our collective love of Jerry and the Grateful Dead experience. They had a blast!

Looks like Bridgeport !!!!!

Concert weekend given tentative OK

BRIDGEPORT — After six years, good vibrations could return to Seaside Park next summer after the Board of Park Commissioners gave tentative approval last Tuesday for another "Gathering of the Vibes" weekend concert.
The board\'s unanimous approval allows the concert\'s sponsor, Terrapin Presents of Danbury, to proceed with ironing out details, such as bonding and security, for the four-day event proposed for Aug. 9-12 in the seafront park.

"I\'m thrilled. I really am," said Kenneth Hays, the Terrapin president. "Seaside Park is absolutely spectacular."

Board member Banjed Labrador sounded a similar note. "I really want to see this happen," he said.

The promoter last staged a Vibes concert in 2000 in Seaside Park. Although it was successful, attracting thousands of people to camp and listen to musical acts for the whole weekend, park maintenance projects kept the show out for the next three years.

Hays then moved it to New York.

In 2003, slow ticket sales forced Hays to cancel a planned blues show and other concert

planned in the park.
"We wanted to come back in 2003, but it wasn\'t meant to be," he said.

Then he unsuccessfully tried to reschedule it in 2004.

Tickets to the latest proposed show would be discounted for city residents, Hays said.

The "Vibes" concerts — there have been 12 in all, Hays said — have featured musicians such as the Allman Brothers, James Brown, Buddy Guy, B.B. King, Chuck Berry, Bruce Hornsby, Arlo Guthrie, Bonnie Raitt and Carlos Santana.

"It\'s been a great ride, but I want to come home," Hays said of his desire to stage a show in Seaside Park again.

If his proposed concert succeeds, Hays said he wants the city to give him exclusive rights to hold concerts there for the next several years.

He wanted a five-year commitment, but said he would settle for three years.

"I don\'t want someone else coming in here, a big promoter, saying, \'You\'re out, Ken,\' " he said.

Labrador tried to reassure him.

"I don\'t think you\'re going to get the short end of the stick," he said.

To launch his proposal, Hays must tackle issues such as providing bond for performance and property damage, and meeting any conditions set by city Parks Manager Andrew Valeri.

He must also meet with Police Chief Bryan T. Norwood regarding security, although Terrapin uses private security to patrol the campground area, Hays said.

Hays will meet with a committee of the parks board to tour the proposed concert area.

Aaron Leo, who covers regional issues, can be reached at 330-6222
