Can Steve Martin match Peter Sellers\' Genius?

Well I do not think so.
The new Pink Panther movie looks decent but I just cannot see anyone in that role but Mr. Sellers.

Steve Martin must have some kind of God complex to think that he can take on the legendary Inspector Clouseau with any degree of success.  In the world of comedy there are the greats, then there are the ones that the greats try to emulate.  And while Steve Martins work over the last 10 years has him on the verge of falling from the former catagory, Peter Sellers defines the later.

I think watching all of these golden globe speeches has got me on some strange soapbox.

please excuse my tirade... carry on

I agree - remakes almost never work - the lead actors never seem to quite nail it. The exception is remakes of French comedy classics - to my knowledge there has NEVER been a decent remake of a French comedy, even when the original stars are in it.

Appalling examples are:
Richard Pryor in The Toy (Le Jouet)
Danson and Co in Three Men & a Baby (Trois Hommes et un Couffin)
and two with the original stars:
Gerard Depardieu in My Father the Hero (Mon Pere Ce Heros)
Jean Reno in Just Visiting (Les Visiteurs)

agreed. Pink panther are classic movies, even the remakes. Can\'t wait for the boxset (loved the cartoons as a kid also).

my prediction: within 3 days, a amazon link will magically appear on this page to the above mentioned \'box set\'...
