Transferring data between pcs

Thanks for the advice on the XP Service Packs. Finally evaded the issue by upgrading the pc!

So now, the new question in the "Will boombox ever learn about computers saga?" is:

What\'s the best way to transfer the data from my old machine to the new one? Direct Cable Connection?

But I\'ve got 40GB to transfer and the DVD writer is only in the new machine!!

easiest way:
take the 40 gig drive out of the old computer, make it a slave drive, install it in the new computer. instant transfer.

a little more advanced:
if you have lack of room for drives, disconnect one of the secondary drives in the new computer so you have a slot for the 40gig (such as cd drive). Hook up the 40 gig, start up and then just copy the files from the 40 gig to a drive that has enough space to hold the files. Then shut down, disconnect the 40, hook back up the other drive that was where you ran the 40 (put back the cd drives connections) and boot back up.


precautions:
remember that whenever you disconnect a drive, you want to pull the power plug out of the tower first, and if you computer wont boot back up after installing the new drive, make sure you reconnected the power.

set up file sharing and transfer everything that way.

but if you have 40gb of data to transfer you must have a decent size hard drive and if it was me i would just add that to the new computer and delete anything you dont need off of it and use both hard drives.

Will follow the moveable hd route as I have to return the other hardrive as the pc was borrowed till I could replace my old dead machine. I was worried I\'d have to play around with the bios etc to get the pc to recognise the inserted drive. Will just moving the jumper on the old drive do it then?

anyone ever have this happen:  I format a floppy disk, save data to it then the next time I put the disk in it\'s saying that it\'s not formatted??  have i lost my data?

just put the hard drive inside and it will become an external and hook up to usb2.0. if you dont know what you are doing this is the easiest way to not screw anything up.

sounds like a bad drive or a bad floppy. i would not rely on a floppy disk to store important documents in this day and age. my computer doesnt even have a floppy drive. i just used the bay for another hard drive.

Bought one of those external HD cases, but the old machine won\'t run USB 2 = see my XP thread why!! Still it\'s going to be useful for this new machine when I fill it.
