HARTFORD, Conn. -- A police pursuit on Interstate 95 on Monday led to the arrests of two New York City men who were accused of transporting more than 200 pounds of marijuana.
James Beckford, 45, and Matthew Alton, 63, both of Brooklyn, N.Y., were charged with possession of more than 1 kilogram of marijuana and possession with intent to sell. Beckford also was charged with reckless driving.
State police said a patrol car on I-95 southbound saw Beckford and Alton commit an unspecified motor vehicle violation. A pursuit began when police tried to stop the pair.
Officers in a state police helicopter said the two men discarded duffel bags, which were later found to contain 229 pounds of marijuana with an estimated value of $1.2 million.
Beckford and Alton were arrested without incident after their car was forced to slow due to construction, state police said.
Beckford and Alton were held on $1 million bond at the state police barracks in Bridgeport and were scheduled to arraigned in Milford Superior Court on Tuesday.
