Jazz fans take note. Really weird music fans take note. Even Zappa fans take note.
I hate to push another band on The Breakfast\'s fansite. However, I feel I owe it to you fellow good music fans.
I mentioned recently in another thread that I saw a band at the
Zeitgeist Gallery in Cambridge, MA, that completely knocked my socks off. This band is
Color and Talea .
I was there because my boyfriend\'s buddy\'s band (Cerulean City, not that great except for Josh\'s friend) was opening up there and we were there to show our support. Not to mention, byob is always sweet when you can just roll in a big cooler full of beer.
Now maybe it was drinking too much Dogfishhead that got me so excited about this band. I don\'t think so.
The band consists of a drummer, bass player, and saxophonist who also does effects etc. Usually I am no big fan of effects and such but he did justice to the idea. The drummer was phenomenal. The bassist, more than solid. Saxophonist was just silly.
The music was truely unique and truely weird. Sometimes breakbeat, sometimes jazz, occasionally funky (although they did not seem to need anything to do with funk, god bless \'em)- always mind-warping and eccentric.
The sax player looked spiffy in his thermal undershirt (nice nipples buddy) and bowler derby or whatever the heck those hats are.
I don\'t even know who to compare these guys to. Maybe a little bit JFJO, but much better and no blabbering on with that melodica thing. (Is that what it\'s called? I think it is.) I say Zappa not because the music was even remotely similiar but simply because of the complicated song writing.
I bought their new album, Project Mayhem I believe is the name, and it doesn\'t compare to seeing them live because improv and live energy is what these guys are all about. But it is a fantastic album nonetheless, with great songs like "Infestation of Peanut Butter by Fungus." There is a sampler on their website which doesn\'t really do them justice but gives you a little bit of an idea. You can at least tell how tasteful and clean the drummer is. They also have another album called Gallery of the Muse.
Went to the sax player\'s apartment after the show and he is sufficiently weird to go along with the music. It was funny watching them live, with the occasional subtle Zappa-esque insulting of the audience members who weren\'t listening. Also, they were constantly looking for suggestions of what to play, but most suggestions proved too easy for them. Much hilarious banter ensued.
These guys had the ability to play jazz and say "fuck jazz" at the same time. That takes skills! Everyone was looking aroud the room the whole time with the "Are they ser!?" expression on their faces. It\'s amazing when you see this little nobody band and all you can say is, "Where the fuck did these guys come from!?"
Anyhow, check em out, but not if you are a meek music fan.
