Cover Songs

Just an idea for a thread that popped into my head today.

I like it when an artist covers a song and reworks it in his/her own way to turn it into something new and unique, and almost to the point where it becomes bigger than the original.  Here are a few off hand that come to mind, can anyone add to the list.

Jimi Hendrix; Bob Dylan\'s "Watchtower"

Joe Cocker; Beatle\'s "Little Help From My Friends"

Jimi Hendrix; Francis Scott Key\'s "Star Spangled Banner"

John Coltrane: Hammerstein\'s (?) "My Favorite Things"

Limp Bizcut; The Who\'s "Behind Blue Eyes"...NOT!!!! HAHA
This isn\'t who it would be if it wasn\'t who it is.

John Coltrane: Hammerstein\'s (?) "My Favorite Things"

Music: Richard Rodgers
Lyrics: Oscar Hammerstein II

In my opinion, all of these songs have been completely redefined by the bands that covered them:

Aretha Franklin - Respect
Cream - Crossroads
Manfred Mann\'s Earth Band - Blinded By the Light
Santana - Black Magic Woman (of course the badass "Gypsy Queen" part is a Santana original)
Janis Joplin - Me and Bobbie McGee
Jeff Buckley - Hallelujah
The Who - Summertime Blues

Also, pretty much any song covered by The Beatles and Led Zeppelin

GD- Morning Dew

I guess there really is a whole slew of songs covered by the GD that could go on the list.

Actually John Cale was the first one to rework it.  Buckley\'s version is a re-worked version of Cale\'s.  You may have heard Cale\'s take on it in Shrek!!!  Tears to my eyes every time....

Little Wing-Hendrix-Derek and the Dominoes
Mad World- Tears For Fears-Gary Jules/Michael Andrews ( I think)
East St. Louis Todeloo(sp)- Duke Ellington-Steely Dan

The Derek and the Dominoes version of Little Wing is absolute garbage. I\'m a huge fan of Derek and the Dominoes (as well as Blind Faith) and I\'ll skip their version every time it comes on. The Hendrix version is amazing though, especially when he played it live.

By the way, there is already a similar thread for this...

Cool that\'s your opinion. I\'m not a Clapton fan by any means, but I feel his version is far more powerful than Hendrix\'s original. But like I said, opinions.

I have heard the Cale version... but I\'m still going with Jeff Buckley on this one. "Grace" is one of my favorite chill-out albums of all-time.
